Dr Raj Shekhar

Dr Raj Shekhar is a dedicated Consultant specialising in General (Internal) Medicine and Stroke Medicine. He is committed to offering high-quality, patient-centred clinical care, providing expert medical evaluation and swift diagnostic assessments for a wide array of acute and long-term medical conditions. His practice focuses on maximising patient recovery, reducing morbidity, and delivering clear, reassuring guidance to individuals and their families.

Dr Shekhar has a particular sub-specialist clinical focus on hyper-acute stroke care, stroke prevention, and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) management. He has been instrumental in pioneering regional telestroke and stroke telemedicine services, enabling rapid diagnostic assessments and the timely administration of acute thrombolysis (clot-busting treatment). Additionally, his clinical interests include reducing atrial fibrillation-related stroke risks, optimising cardiovascular health, and improving acute medical care pathways.

Dr Shekhar completed his medical education graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and a Doctor of Medicine (MD). He attained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and was later elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP). He undertook higher specialist training in Cardiff and completed advanced stroke sub-specialist training at a major teaching hospital in London. Alongside his clinical responsibilities, Dr Shekhar serves as Director of Medical Education, playing an active role in training medical students and junior doctors, and holds senior executive positions within professional organisations, including the British and Irish Association of Stroke Physicians.
