Mr. Rahul Bhattacharyya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon working at Ross Hall Hospital in Glasgow and also the Wellington Hospital, London. Within the NHS, he works at NHS Lanarkshire University Hospitals and holds the esteemed position of Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at Imperial College London. Mr. Bhattacharyya is also an executive committee member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK)
Mr. Bhattacharyya's clinical focus centres exclusively on knee surgery, with a particular emphasis on sports-related knee injuries, including the treatment of elite-level athletes. His expertise encompasses a wide range of knee surgical procedures, such as arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), meniscal repair, meniscal allograft transplantation, ligament (cruciate and collateral) repair and reconstruction, cartilage repair, and patella (knee cap) stabilisation surgery. He also specialises in addressing arthritis in the knee joint, prioritising joint preservation whenever possible. This involves a spectrum of approaches, from physiotherapy and knee joint injections (steroids, Hyaluronic acid, PRP, biologics) to joint realignment surgery, as well as partial and total knee joint replacement. Mr. Bhattacharyya is also proficient in robotic-assisted knee replacements.
Mr. Bhattacharyya's journey in medicine began with his graduation with Honours in medicine and surgery from the University of Sheffield in 2009. His specialised training in orthopaedics took place in the West of Scotland, Glasgow. He further honed his skills through a subspecialty fellowship in sports knee surgery under the guidance of internationally acclaimed experts, Mr. Tim Spalding and Mr. Pete Thompson, in Coventry, UK. During this fellowship, he received comprehensive training in cutting-edge sports knee surgery techniques, making him one of the few surgeons in Scotland qualified to perform Meniscal Allograft Transplantation for patients with meniscal deficiencies. Additionally, he completed another fellowship in knee and trauma surgery at the King's College Hospital Major Trauma Centre in London.
Mr. Bhattacharyya is not only an accomplished surgeon but also a passionate educator and trainer. He serves as faculty in various national courses and plays a crucial role in mentoring the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.
He is deeply committed to personalised patient care, guided by the latest techniques and evidence-based approaches, tailored to each patient's unique needs to achieve optimal outcomes. His strong academic background is highlighted by two higher research degrees: an MSc in orthopaedics (awarded top-performing candidate) from the University of Edinburgh and an MD (Res) from Imperial College London. During his time at Imperial College London, he pioneered the use of Cognitive Task Analysis in knee and trauma surgery, leading to numerous academic publications and presentations.
Mr. Bhattacharyya continues to be actively involved in research as a Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, collaborating nationally and internationally. His research interests extend to biomechanics, focusing on innovations in surgical techniques in sports knee surgery, research in meniscal allograft transplantation, and clinical research aimed at evaluating patient outcomes to uphold the highest standards of care. He has published extensively and presented his research at both national and international levels. He regularly gets invited as faculty to various national and international conferences and courses in knee surgery.

Professor Rahul Bhattacharyya is professional, provides clear explanations, and is reassuring to patients. Patients often report successful outcomes from procedures such as ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, and partial or full knee replacement. Many patients highlight excellent care and express gratitude for regaining mobility and experiencing reduced pain. A consistent theme across feedback is the positive impact of his work on complex knee injuries and major knee interventions.
Prof Bhattacharyya was extremely kind, very professional in his manner and explained clearly how he'd carried out the procedure on my right knee. I am delighted with the result. My walking has massively improved and the pain gone. He explains that you must follow the exercise programme for best results. I did and the result is amazing
My experience with Dr Bhattacharyya has been exceptional. I had seen countless amount of surgeons/ consultants/ physios about my patella/ knee problems and nobody had a cure for it, until I met Dr Bhattacharyya. Super friendly and very approachable if you don’t understand something. Still early days for me but I can tell my knee is a lot better.
recently I underwent knee surgery under the care of Professor Rahul Bhattacharyya, having also had previous knee surgery performed by him last year. On both occasions, I received outstanding care and treatment. Professor Bhattacharyya demonstrated exceptional professionalism throughout every stage of my care. His expertise, clear communication, and attention to detail gave me complete confidence in the treatment I received. The surgeries were conducted to the highest standard, and I am very pleased with the outcomes. What stood out most, however, was not only his clinical excellence but also the genuine care, compassion, and respect he showed towards me as a patient. He took the time to listen, answer questions, and ensure that I felt informed, reassured, and supported throughout the process. The same high standards were reflected in the wider team involved in my care, who were professional, kind, and attentive at all times. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Bhattacharyya and the team for the exceptional care I received. Their dedication, skill, and compassion made a significant difference to my experience and recovery, and I would have no hesitation in recommending their services to others.
Very positive experience I felt very comfortable & fully informed throughout the proceedure
Knee arthroscopy + open AMIC procedure From 1st appointment to surgery in under 6 weeks Acurate & detailed consultation, precise surgery, dedicated post surgery care. No pain as before. Would do it all again in a heartbeat.
Dr Rahul Bhattacharyya, has operated on me twice in the last 6months. First of all for my Meniscus, but when he operated he found I had no ACL, so 3months later I had ACL Reconstruction, and I’m 12weeks post op, and the knee feels solid and with his direction I have a great physio that is getting me moving and I’m progressing very well. Highly recommend Dr Raul, very clear in what had to be done, and kept me in the loop throughout the process.
I recently seen Mr Bhattacharyya for my 12 weeks follow up appointment post ACL and Meniscus surgery. Before the surgery I was well informed of what the surgery entailed and given recommendation on where the harvest graft would be taken from and what the recovery process would be like. Having clear instructions really helped with the recovery and I am feeling optimistic that I will get back to playing sports in the future.
Dr Bhattacharyya was a fantastic surgeon. My knee feels as good as new!
Following an injury to my knee I was referred to Mr Bhattacharyya. From our initial consultation I felt relaxed and confident in all aspects of my care . He also liaised with my physio whilst my injury was investigated and subsequently diagnosed with a torn meniscus and degree of osteoarthritis . I was given options for treatment and Mr Bhattacharyya discussed all of the choices with me, taking time to answer any of my questions. As a result I had a surgical procedure carried out by Mr Bhattacharyya. I was informed of all the possible outcomes and felt confident and prepared . Fortunately I made a good recovery. I feel grateful for this outcome and would not hesitate to recommend Mr Bhattacharyya for his care, professionalism, and expertise that enhanced my experience and recovery.
Professor Bhattacharyya is a skilled knee surgeon at the forefront of advances in soft-tissue knee and arthroplasty surgery. I highly recommend him.
