Mr. Rahul Bhattacharyya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon working at Ross Hall Hospital in Glasgow and also the Wellington Hospital, London. Within the NHS, he works at NHS Lanarkshire University Hospitals and holds the esteemed position of Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at Imperial College London. Mr. Bhattacharyya is also an executive committee member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK)
Mr. Bhattacharyya's clinical focus centres exclusively on knee surgery, with a particular emphasis on sports-related knee injuries, including the treatment of elite-level athletes. His expertise encompasses a wide range of knee surgical procedures, such as arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), meniscal repair, meniscal allograft transplantation, ligament (cruciate and collateral) repair and reconstruction, cartilage repair, and patella (knee cap) stabilisation surgery. He also specialises in addressing arthritis in the knee joint, prioritising joint preservation whenever possible. This involves a spectrum of approaches, from physiotherapy and knee joint injections (steroids, Hyaluronic acid, PRP, biologics) to joint realignment surgery, as well as partial and total knee joint replacement. Mr. Bhattacharyya is also proficient in robotic-assisted knee replacements.
Mr. Bhattacharyya's journey in medicine began with his graduation with Honours in medicine and surgery from the University of Sheffield in 2009. His specialised training in orthopaedics took place in the West of Scotland, Glasgow. He further honed his skills through a subspecialty fellowship in sports knee surgery under the guidance of internationally acclaimed experts, Mr. Tim Spalding and Mr. Pete Thompson, in Coventry, UK. During this fellowship, he received comprehensive training in cutting-edge sports knee surgery techniques, making him one of the few surgeons in Scotland qualified to perform Meniscal Allograft Transplantation for patients with meniscal deficiencies. Additionally, he completed another fellowship in knee and trauma surgery at the King's College Hospital Major Trauma Centre in London.
Mr. Bhattacharyya is not only an accomplished surgeon but also a passionate educator and trainer. He serves as faculty in various national courses and plays a crucial role in mentoring the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.
He is deeply committed to personalised patient care, guided by the latest techniques and evidence-based approaches, tailored to each patient's unique needs to achieve optimal outcomes. His strong academic background is highlighted by two higher research degrees: an MSc in orthopaedics (awarded top-performing candidate) from the University of Edinburgh and an MD (Res) from Imperial College London. During his time at Imperial College London, he pioneered the use of Cognitive Task Analysis in knee and trauma surgery, leading to numerous academic publications and presentations.
Mr. Bhattacharyya continues to be actively involved in research as a Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, collaborating nationally and internationally. His research interests extend to biomechanics, focusing on innovations in surgical techniques in sports knee surgery, research in meniscal allograft transplantation, and clinical research aimed at evaluating patient outcomes to uphold the highest standards of care. He has published extensively and presented his research at both national and international levels. He regularly gets invited as faculty to various national and international conferences and courses in knee surgery.

I have had a full knee replacement 17 days ago. Today was my first outpatient appointment with Dr Bhattacharyya. I seen him before and directly after my operation where he took the opportunity to discuss any concerns I had he also came a day later to check on me and give me advice on what to do for the best recovery possible.
Dr Rahul Bhattacharyya provided the meniscus repair on my right knee. Every step of the process was made very clear by him which has lead to a full recovery 3 months after the surgery.
I recently had a partial knee replacement. Which has been a great success. This was my sign off appointment. Dr Bhattacharyya has been very professional and approachable. He has explained everything clearly to me from my initial appointment. I have been very impressed having him as my consultant.
Mr Rahul gave me very clear instructions with how my patellar tendon graft has been healing and gave me very clear instructions answers to any questions I had.
I found my experience very pleasant, I was very curious with many questions and all were answered clearly.
Everything about this process from Mr Bhattacharyya has been professional and specialist.
I would highly recommend Mr Bhattacharyya to carry out this form of surgery (arthroscopy). He was completely clear in what options were available to me, explaining the pros and cons of each one. Since my surgery , I am now approx 8 post and am participating in more exercise (strength training, circuit classes, Pilates etc) than I was doing prior to suffering the pain. He was completely approachable and empathetic.
The knee surgery went very well. I’m very pleased with Dr Bhattacharyya’s communication and professionalism. When we first met he was very interested and keen to get my knee repaired. I’m very happy with the results.
Great experience with Dr Bhattacharyya and Ross Hall, everything went seamless and I would recommend others to go ahead.
I had ACL reconstruction and meniscus root repair and the recovery and has been very good
