About Professor William Ribbans

Professor Bill Ribbans qualified from the Royal Free Hospital in London (1973-1980). He completed his initial training in London, serving as a Senior Registrar on the Middlesex/Royal National Orthopaedic rotation, and further honed his skills through Fellowships in Sheffield and at Harvard University. His extensive training encompasses medicine, general surgery, trauma and orthopaedic surgery, with a focus on the assessment and surgical treatment of bone, joint, and soft-tissue disorders.

In 1991, Professor Ribbans was appointed as a Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital. In 1996, he returned to his hometown to work at Northampton General Hospital. Since 2012, he has been worked exclusively in the private medical sector. He has served as the Medical Director of the Sports Medicine Rehabilitation Centre at Moulton. He has is been a Director of The County Clinic in Northampton since 2011.

Professor Ribbans has stopped undertaking surgery but remains extremely busy with out-patient clinics.

Professor Ribbans collaborates with a network of experts across medicine, surgery, radiology, anaesthesia, physiotherapy, and podiatry, both locally and nationally, to ensure his patients receive optimal assessment, advice, and treatment for musculoskeletal conditions.

Bill is the professor of Sports Medicine at the University of Northampton. He has worked with many local, regional and national sporting organisations. He has looked after world champions in eight different sports and athletes with 28 Olympic medals.

In addition to his clinical work, Professor Ribbans is extensively involved in education and research. He lectures at national and international conferences, hosts numerous meetings, and supervises several PhD students. He undertakes al ot of media work and is the author of 'Knife in the Fast Lane' (2020) and A Plague on all our Sports (2024).
