About Dr Gwithyen Silk

Mr Gwithyen Silk FRCS (Tr & Orth), MRCS, MBChB, MA,
BA (Hons)

Consultant Knee Surgeon and Knee Replacement Specialist

Mr Gwithyen Silk is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knee surgery and lower limb arthroplasty. He provides expert assessment and treatment for a wide range of knee conditions, combining the latest surgical techniques with personalised patient care.

Mr Silk became a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2025 and trained at the University of Cambridge and the University of Edinburgh. He completed his orthopaedic training in the South West of England before undertaking advanced fellowship training in knee surgery at the renowned Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, and the Fortius Clinic, London. He has trained with internationally recognised knee surgeons and developed expertise in both joint preservation and joint replacement surgery. He was awarded the Dutch Travelling Knee Fellowship in 2023, where he was privileged to be exposed to the knowledge and experience of surgeons in Holland. He also spent time at the KNVB campus, the centre for Dutch National Football, to gain a further understanding of how
to manage the training and injury prevention in elite sportspeople.

He specialises in the management of:

  • Knee arthritis
  • Meniscal injuries
  • Sports-related knee injuries
  • Ligament injuries, including ACL tears
  • Patellofemoral disorders
  • Complex knee pain
  • Knee replacement surgery

Mr Silk has particular expertise in modern knee replacement
techniques, including robotic-assisted knee surgery, and holds certification in
VELYS, MAKO and ROSA robotic systems. His approach is focused on restoring
mobility, reducing pain, and helping patients return to the activities they
enjoy as quickly and safely as possible. He uses a number of Enhanced Recovery
pathways with specific physio led pathways designed to accelerate recovery and rehabilitation.

Alongside his private practice, Mr Silk is a Consultant
Orthopaedic Surgeon at Northampton General Hospital, where he specialises in
lower limb arthroplasty and soft tissue knee surgery.

He sees NHS Choose and Book as well as private patients at
the Three Shires, The New Foscote Hospital and The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital.

He is actively involved in teaching, research, and training
the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons. His work has been published in
peer-reviewed journals, and he regularly presents at national and international
orthopaedic meetings.

A lifelong sportsman, Mr Silk has competed at a high level
in rowing, rugby, swimming, and endurance running. This personal understanding
of sport and rehabilitation gives him unique insight into the challenges faced
by active patients seeking to return to peak performance.

Mr Silk is committed to delivering evidence-based care with
clear communication, ensuring that every patient understands their diagnosis
and treatment options and feels fully supported throughout their recovery.
