About Professor Cathy Speed

Professor Cathy Speed is a Consultant in Rheumatology, Sport and Exercise Medicine. She is a Professor of Sports Medicine & Human Performance at Cardiff Metropolitan University and Professor of Sports Medicine at the University of St Mark & St John.

She specialises in the management of sporting and non-sporting musculoskeletal injuries, chronic pain syndromes, arthritis and exercise medicine. She also had a specialist interest in tendon and other soft tissue injuries and in diagnostic ultrasound.

She uses advanced diagnostic techniques, including imaging and biomechanical assessments, in the evaluation of medical complaints. She also utilises various injection therapies, extracorporeal shock wave therapy, exercise and rehabilitation. She runs an Exercise Prescription Clinic and develops customised exercise programmes for all types of individuals, from the sedentary to the elite athlete.

She has extensive experience working with athletes and has been a Physician at a number of Olympic and Commonwealth Games and was the Chief Medical Officer to Team GB Holding Camp for the Beijing Olympic Games.

She has been extensively published in peer-reviewed journals and is the author of a textbook on soft tissue and sport injuries. She is also active in the training of undergraduates and postgraduates.
