“Mr Aho was excellent throughout. He is very personable and clear in his explanations and reasoning for his recommended course of action. I had plenty of time to ask questions. I felt that I was being regarded as an individual and that he had empathy with me and my concerns. Although I had not had contact with Mr Aho before my first appointment I knew immediately that he was someone in whom I could have confidence. A belief completely confirmed by the treatment I received and the end result.“

    About

Mr Tev Aho is a consultant urologist working from the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. He specialises in treating male patients with urinary issues and retention due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). He is also very interested in the treatment of kidney cancer, being one the busiest kidney surgeons in the UK.

Mr Aho moved from New Zealand to the UK to become a Clinical Fellow in Uro-oncology in the Cambridge University Hospitals in 2003, the following year he was appointed Consultant Urological Surgeon. He is the number one surgeon in the UK for performing Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), he has brilliant outcomes of this procedure especially within men who don’t perform well with Urolift. He is highly skilled in performing Urolift, Rezum and Aquablation procedures for BPH. He has been offering Urolift since 2015. He was also one of 3 surgeons in the UK in 2017 to be able to provide Aquablation. Following this trend, he was also the very first NHS surgeon to perform Rezum procedures in the Cambridgeshire NHS Trust and continues to offer this procedure as an outpatient procedure.

He has a keen research history being involved in HoLEP research since the procedures early days. He introduced this procedure to Cambridge University hospitals in 2004, where it became and remains the treatment of choice for men seeking treatment for urinary retention issues. Additionally, he commits a significant amount of his time to medical education. He lectures on HoLEP at national and international conferences and hosts a HoLEP course at his NHS Trust. He is also the founding president of the UK Holium User Group (HUG) and continues to be a mentor of trainee doctors learning HoLEP. Up until 2014, he was the Urology Training Programme Director for the East of England. For 5 years after he was on the Urology Specialist Advisory Committee, where he was responsible for the training in urology.

Mr Aho’s personal life is enriched with a wide range of hobbies like marathon running, watching musicals, and attending festivals and music events. He also loves to experience the good things in life like great food, good wine, and company.

Tev is probably the nicest consultant I've ever dealt with. The UK's leading practioner of HOLEP. He is very patient at explaining every thing , both at the initial consultation and at every stage though out the process.

Mr Aho's calm and professional bedside manner is evidence of his great clinical experience. I was concerned about my INR statistics. Mr Aho talked me through the Holep procedure and explained his plan for dealing with it. This was all very reassuring at a difficult time.

Ever since the HoLEP procedure performed by Dr Aho my quality of life has changed dramatically overnight for the better. Before then, I suffered with weak urine flow, not being able to empty my bladder and I even ended up at A&E a couple of times which resulted with me coming back home with a catheter. During the procedure, I was completely a sleep and didn't feel a thing. After the procedure there were some moments where I was uncomfortable rather than in pain, and there was a positive result immediately after the operation. It did take a couple of months for my body to just, but this was totally normal. Dr Aho was very patient, informative and showed a genuine interest and understanding at every step of my journey to get better. From the moment I stepped through the door for my first consultation to the moment I woke up after my surgery. I am deeply grateful to Dr Aho for all the help he has given me. Thank you very much, Dr Aho!

I found Mr Aho to be very informative , explaining what he was going to do and what to expect regarding recovery during our first meeting. He spoke to me pre operation at the hospital relaxing me with his assured confidence in the procedure I was about to have. Next morning after my procedure he was again there in person to talk me through how things had gone. Then explaining what I should expect over the coming weeks and months. I have to say it is now 3 months since the procedure and my life is now pretty much back to normal. Giving me a much improved quality of life. Thankyou Mr Aho.

Excellent in looking after me. Obviously can not comment on the HoLEP procedure as beyond my understanding. I did have to make a decision on my own to stay one extra night rather than being advised safe to leave.

It is now almost 5 months since the HoLEP procedure by Mr Aho, and I have been thrilled by the results. Before then I had been plagued by very weak urine flow, an urgency to urinate, not being able to empty my bladder, having to get up many times at night and the worry at times that I could not urinate at all. I had been on various drugs to shrink my prostate and alleviate the conditions, but whilst these drugs had had some success the underlying issue was certainly not getting any better. Surgery was not an “if” but a “when”. Given I am in really good health, I decided to go ahead with the HoLEP procedure, and I am so pleased I did! The whole process was uncomfortable rather than painful and there was a positive result immediately after the operation. Quite amazing! It did take things a few months for it all to settle down and doing the pelvic floor exercise helped, but I am now urinating like a “waterfall” and much more in control! I am very much back to normal activity, going the gym, playing golf etc. One other point, when Mr Aho did the operation, he unexpectantly found some cancerous cells in the wall on the bladder which he immediately removed. Without the operation this cancer would have gone unnoticed, and no doubt caused problems for me in later life. I am hugely grateful to My Aho for all the help he has given me. It was not only his great skill in the operation itself but also in the exceptional advice and care he gave me throughout the process. Thank you very much Mr Aho.
