About Dr Philip Alexander
Mr Philip Alexander is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with expertise in cataract and vitreoretinal surgery. He is based at Addenbrooke's Hospital, (part of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust) where in addition to his cataract and vitreoretinal workload, co-leads the Stickler Syndrome Diagnostic Service. Mr Alexander sees private patients at the Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital and Nuffield Cambridge Hospital.
Mr Alexander attained his medical degree from the University of London, graduating with a double distinction and a number academic prizes. He went on to complete his surgical training in Nottingham, Southampton and at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.
Outside his medical practice, Mr Alexander extensively publishes in peer-reviewed journals and has written over 50 publications, including a first author publication in 2023 in the New England Journal of Medicine. In 2013, he was awarded funding from the Global Ophthalmology Award Programme allowing him to conduct research into ocular stem cell transplantation, and he went on to receive a doctorate for his work. Mr Alexander has further gained an MBA, with his thesis looking at healthcare innovation for patients with diabetic eye disease.
Mr Alexander is very involved in the training of Ophthalmologists and Vitreoretinal Surgical Training Fellows. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and his professional memberships include the British Medical Association and the British and Eire Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons.
Mr Alexander teaches clinical medical students and is Affiliate Associate Professor of the Clinical School, at the University of Cambridge. He also runs supervisions in neuroscience for preclinical students at Pembroke College.

I arranged to see Mr Alexander to seek advice on a problem with my left eye. The experience at the Spire was, as always. excellent. My meeting with Mr Alexander went well and the testing of my sight and diagnosis as thorough and concise as it was informative. I now have a full understanding of the problem with my left eye and what can be done to rectify it when I feel the time is right.
I have a connective tissue disorder and therefore I was anxious to have a surgeon familiar with this condition and the difficulties that can arise. I found my initial appointment to be extremely encouraging, reassuring and felt I was in experienced hands.

Mr Alexander is one of the most pleasant and professional surgeons I’ve had the experience of meeting. He explained everything in detail and has very good patience and reassurance about the process and procedures required.
I had my initial consultation with Mr Alexander on 1st August 2026. My eyes we checked very carefully by Mr Alexander who then explained in great detail what had happened to my eye. He then explained what treetment would be needed and that I would have to be examined regularly for the next two years. He was very helpful and answered all the questions we wanted. We felt much more relaxed after our visit as we now know what we will have to do in the future
Dr. Alexander was thorough, gentle, and clear in all aspects of my visit. His staff was prompt, kind, and very helpful. Without a doubt I will be recommending his services to my colleagues should they ever need eye care.
A very understanding response to my concerns and question with an explanation in clear English.
