Matthew Welck | Consultant Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Surgeon London is one of the UK's foremost foot and ankle specialists. He holds a Senior Consultant post at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), Stanmore — one of Europe's leading tertiary orthopaedic centres — and is Honorary Associate Clinical Professor at University College London (UCL). His practice is devoted exclusively to adult foot and ankle surgery, with a national and international reputation built on elite tertiary referral practice.
Mr Welck's clinical expertise is centred on the most complex and demanding cases in foot and ankle surgery. He is a recognised authority in ankle replacement (total ankle arthroplasty), performing primary and revision total ankle replacement surgery for patients with advanced ankle arthritis, including cases referred following failed surgery elsewhere. His practice is one of the UK's leading destinations for ankle replacement surgery in London and the surrounding region.
He is a specialist in complex reconstruction of the foot and ankle, including flatfoot deformity correction, cavovarus (high arch) reconstruction, hindfoot realignment, and Charcot-Marie-Tooth related deformity. Revision surgery — the management of failed, complicated, or previously operated foot and ankle conditions — forms a core pillar of his tertiary practice. Patients are referred from across the UK and internationally for his expertise in revision ankle replacement and revision complex reconstruction.
Mr Welck is one of very few UK foot and ankle surgeons with deep subspecialist expertise in weightbearing CT (WBCT). He has pioneered the clinical application of WBCT in assessing foot and ankle alignment, sesamoid position, syndesmosis injuries, and hindfoot deformity. His award-winning WBCT expertise has been recognised by the European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS) and British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS), and underpins the precision and outcomes of his surgical planning.
Double fellowship trained — including a combined clinical and research fellowship at the globally renowned Foot and Ankle Institute in Baltimore, USA — Mr Welck holds MBChB, BSc (First Class Honours with Distinction), MSc (Distinction), and FRCS(Tr&Orth). He has an h-index of 22 with over 1,700 international research citations.
Private clinics are held at HCA The Princess Grace Hospital, Marylebone; Spire Bushey; the RNOH Private Patients Unit, Stanmore; and The Wellington Hospital Elstree — serving patients across North and Central London.
