Mr Jonathan Perera is a well experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Oncology Surgeon at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital with over 15 years of experience. He completed his medical degree at University College London in 2005, followed by his higher surgical orthopaedic training at the prestigious Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Mr Perera completed his research doctorate in Orthopaedics and was awarded his DipOrth by University College London in 2017. He also completed a BOOS Diploma in Orthopaedic Oncology recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2022 and is a Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics of the Royal College of Surgeons.
With a medical career spanning over 15 years, predominantly in the field of surgery, Mr Perera has garnered extensive experience. Since 2011, he has been actively involved in various surgical domains, primarily orthopaedics, but also including vascular surgery, plastic surgery and general surgery (including upper GI, colorectal, HPB and endocrine surgery). Throughout this period, he actively participated in multiple multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) dedicated to cancer care.
Among his many achievements, Mr Perera takes great pride in being the primary researcher and second author of ‘Getting it Right First Time’. This ground-breaking work has not only revolutionised orthopaedic care across the UK but has also had a profound impact on numerous surgical and non-surgical specialties, both domestically and internationally.
Mr Perera's ultimate mission for cancer care on a global scale is to foster more collaborative research projects between different medical units. He recognises that identifying the right experts for specific aspects of cancer care can sometimes present significant challenges. To address this, he envisions streamlining the care process through effective networks and groups of clinicians, thereby greatly enhancing the patient experience and, hopefully, leading to reduced morbidity and mortality associated with this complex disease.

My visits always feel like friends meeting to catch up. The fact that Jonathan takes time to listen and take notes is always reassuring.
A smooth and comfortable experience getting a benign tumour removed from my finger. Mr Perera was great - kind and communicative, explaining things as we went on answering my questions.
Professional, caring, knowledgeable and relatable. Would highly recommend.
We have found Dr Perera to be truly remarkable. Since the very first time we met Dr Pereira we have always felt that he has gone above and beyond our expectations in terms of the time afforded to our son in understanding how he’s feeling and has always taken the time with Dylan who feels very well cared for. So much so that although this has been an incredibly difficult situation to navigate for our son he has always looked forward to seeing Dr Perera and has a very strong connection with him. Dylan does not open up to people very easily but he has certainly done so with Dr Perera and that is down to his very caring nature and the way he is with him. We feel truly blessed being under his care, he is wonderful Dr and a wonderful human being. A true credit to the NHS.
Absolutely amazing doctor, I personally feel like he’s on of my closest friends because of how much we have personally connected even though he’s my doctor. You can tell that this person really takes pride in his work and has unconditional love for what he does. He’s amazing at his job and will forever be in my heart and my favourite doctor. Amazing person and an amazing Doctor. I feel truly blessed to be his patient.
This man is a legend! He saved my leg, I had a sarcoma and I went for a face to face appointment he took one look at my scan and admitted me immediately and operated a day later, he looked at me as a human with compassion and not just a doctor. A full femur replacement and 10 weeks later I’m walking unaided and it’s thanks to him. I owe him my life and this man genuinely enjoys his job which is why he’s so good at it! Thankyou Mr Perera from the bottom of my heart
Dr Perera made me feel at ease throughout my entire time working with him. He was reassuring, relatable and comforting. I think my experience was extremely helped by Dr Perera's approach.
Mr Jonathan Perera has been incredible. We never felt rushed. He took the time to explain everything, he spoke very plainly so we understood everything he said. He had the best bedside manner I have ever experienced from a doctor and I have seen many doctors. I honestly felt that we would not have had a better experience if we had gone privately. This was a very traumatic time for our family and Mr Perera did his best to keep us calm and stopped us from spiralling. I cannot recommend him enough. I cannot speak more highly of him.
Mr Perera was superb throughout the entire procedure.I was referred to RNOH due to the complexity of the operation. He explained all options leading to the surgery. This was carried out skillfully leading to the tumour being removed. His post op support was also excellent
Jonathan is a gifted surgeon and great colleague.
