About

Mr Jonathan Perera is a well experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Oncology Surgeon at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital with over 15 years of experience. He completed his medical degree at University College London in 2005, followed by his higher surgical orthopaedic training at the prestigious Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Mr Perera completed his research doctorate in Orthopaedics and was awarded his DipOrth by University College London in 2017. He also completed a BOOS Diploma in Orthopaedic Oncology recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2022 and is a Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics of the Royal College of Surgeons.

With a medical career spanning over 15 years, predominantly in the field of surgery, Mr Perera has garnered extensive experience. Since 2011, he has been actively involved in various surgical domains, primarily orthopaedics, but also including vascular surgery, plastic surgery and general surgery (including upper GI, colorectal, HPB and endocrine surgery). Throughout this period, he actively participated in multiple multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) dedicated to cancer care.

Among his many achievements, Mr Perera takes great pride in being the primary researcher and second author of ‘Getting it Right First Time’. This ground-breaking work has not only revolutionised orthopaedic care across the UK but has also had a profound impact on numerous surgical and non-surgical specialties, both domestically and internationally.

Mr Perera's ultimate mission for cancer care on a global scale is to foster more collaborative research projects between different medical units. He recognises that identifying the right experts for specific aspects of cancer care can sometimes present significant challenges. To address this, he envisions streamlining the care process through effective networks and groups of clinicians, thereby greatly enhancing the patient experience and, hopefully, leading to reduced morbidity and mortality associated with this complex disease.

Absolutely brilliant. From start to end the communication, positively and care has been unmatched. A plethora of knowledge, confidence and going the extra mile as a normal to give me the best outcome possible. He then took the time with my family to reassure them aswell. I genuinely cannot fault him. The surgery itself, so well done, he has given me the best outcome in a horrendous situation I found myself in. I can only say thank you, for a) saving my leg when I had given up b) giving me and my family hope.

Explanation

I cannot fault the treatment my son received from Mr Perera. We faced a very scary diagnosis initially and Mr Perera explained in detail the diagnosis but also made us feel very calm at the same time and I felt my son was being looked after by the best, which he is. Although Mr Perera is looking after many patients he made you feel like you were the only one and followed up personally on progress and we were able to contact him anytime and he was always very quick to respond. Nothing was ever too much trouble and at times we were a bit unreasonable with our requests, because it was an unknown situation, but Mr Perera always listened and tried to accommodate all of our needs. He gained the confidence of my son and myself very quickly and what was a very scary situation for my son he gave my son the confidence that he would get through the operations and long recovery, which he has. I am very grateful for everything Mr Perera has done and continues to do for my son and feel we have been very fortunate to have been treated by him.
