About

Vish is a triple fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery. He undertook his medical degree at UCL and subsequent higher orthopaedic training in the East Midlands (UK).

He has trained in four of London's renowned tertiary hospitals and has travelled as far as Japan to build his specialist skills in arthroscopic ‘keyhole', shoulder and elbow surgery as well as shoulder replacement and, complex upper limb fracture surgery. Vish is also felllowship trained in hand surgery.

Vish continues to serve in the NHS and has a high volume NHS practice at the prestigious Royal Berkshire Hospital Shoulder and Elbow Unit, Reading. Vish performs a minimum of 400 procedures a year and monitors his patient outcomes.

He is extensively involved in medical education which includes teaching Oxford University Medical students, physiotherapists, as well as nationally training future consultants in shoulder and elbow surgery. He also works as teaching faculty at the Royal College of Surgeons of England helping to enhance surgical care.

Vish is also one of a few surgeons who are  Members of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine UK, helping him to treat sports related injuries non-operatively and is also uniquely skilled to provide his patients Ultrasound guided injections. His general philosophy is that an accurate, specialist assessment together with a team-based approach to rehabilitation help patients to make a full recovery without the need for surgery in the majority of shoulder problems when managed early.

Vish uses the latest technology and modern surgical techniques to ensure his patients can start rehabilitation sooner after surgery. He has presented research nationally and internationally on rotator cuff repairs, shoulder instability and has won an international prize on patient safety research work.

Vish prides himself as being kind, friendly and above all a dedicated doctor for his patients to ensure a successful recovery. His practice is evidence based and he closely works with physiotherapists and radiologists to ensure his patients get the right diagnosis and prompt personalised treatment.

Explanation

From the first consultation I felt I was in incredibly capable hands. Mr Patel gave me all the information I needed and I went into surgery confident that it was the right course to take. Four months later my shoulder is feeling great and I’m already back doing physical activities I thought I wouldn’t be able to do again.

Explanation

I was surprised how thorough Dr Vish Patel was in his examination of my elbow issue. He suggested that the problem may not actually be in my elbow but the surrounding areas as I had a clean MRI of the elbow. He immediately found some issues in my left biceps and rear deltoid muscles. He was more than happy to explain clearly and also compared results between my left and right arms to show me exactly what the issues were.

Explanation

Vish is clearly at the peak of his profession and provided me with clear diagnosis, and understandable explanation of all planned treatments and potential outcomes. He is very approachable and reassuring. There is no doubt in my mind that his actions and skills have helped to resolve my severely torn shoulder tendon. I am a 69 year old active male, at the time of writing, I am 7 months post op, and I have much better mobility and weekly improvement to my shoulder. I am already enjoying many activities and fully intend to continue with the rehab/exercises that Vish recommends.
