Mr Tom Setchell

Mr Setchell is an incredible obstetric surgeon as well as a kind and compassionate doctor. We feel lucky and glad to have met him and had him deliver our daughter. After a complicated pregnancy, I got in touch with him after my 36-week scan showed I still had a low placenta and needed a Caesarian section birth. I had wanted a natural birth, but after a detailed discussion I was sure he was the right person to perform the operation -- and that we needed to go ahead. He has a calm and reassuring clinical approach and answers every question in detail. We owe our daughter's good health today in no small part to Mr Setchell. He found another rare, undiagnosed and potentially life-threatening placental complication during the procedure, which meant that our baby could only ever have been delivered safely by Caesarian. His earlier advice to me to proceed with the surgery was even more right than we knew at the time and his expertise in the operating theatre almost certainly saved her life. We are beyond grateful and happy. All this to say, he was absolutely the right person to help at what felt like one of the most vulnerable and exciting points in our lives. Thank you!

I saw Mr Tom Setchell for my first pregnancy, from week 7 right through to the delivery of my baby in September 2026 and I cannot recommend him highly enough. Mr Setchell is, of course, extremely knowledgeable and professional. He’s widely recognised and respected across the hospital and beyond. But what truly makes him different is his gift for patient care. He is genuinely kind and patient. He takes his time at every visit and never rushes you. As first-time parents we had endless questions, and he never once dismissed them or made us feel we were bothering him. During the pregnancy we saw him monthly, then weekly towards the end but he was always available by email in between appointments for any question or worry, so you constantly feel looked after. He is also remarkably gentle and respectful of your privacy. In more intimate moments he always asks and makes sure you're comfortable with what's about to happen which put me at ease very quickly. He was encouraging and supportive of the birth plan I had chosen. We delivered at the Lindo Wing at St Mary's, where Mr Setchell is the star consultant. Every midwife, nurse and member of staff knows him and adores him, with only positive things to say. My delivery took an entire weekend, from Friday night to Sunday morning, and Mr Setchell was with me every couple of hours throughout, in person or by phone, always making sure I felt reassured and well. We cannot think of anyone else to deliver our future babies and would 100% recommend him to anyone.

From consultation to operation and post care, I could not have asked for better, Mr Setchell listened, sympathised, talked through the process clearly and kindly and with humour when it was needed. His follow up care was no different.

Tom is an excellent daughter. He delivered my daughter and has provided incredible case since then. Highly recommended.

Mr Setchell has excellent communication skills and was thorough in his explanations. He is highly skilled and knowledgeable. Most importantly he made me feel safe, informed and showed genuine kindness.

I delivered my baby boy under Dr Setchell’s guidance. My whole experience has been very comforting right from the get go. Dr Setchell is a kind and patient doctor, exactly what a first time parent seeks. He educated us throughout and helped us make informed decisions through the pregnancy. It keeps one reassured that they are well taken care of. We wouldn’t have had it any other way and if we plan on expanding our family, we would go back to Dr Setchell at the drop of a hat.

I cannot rate my experience with Mr Setchell more highly. He guided me through my pregnancy with so much professionalism and calm. My baby was delivered safely and happily and my c-section was performed exquisitely. Excellent bedside manner, too. I will return to his care every time.

We couldn’t have asked for a better consultant for the birth of our son. Mr Setchell is extremely knowledgable, has a great bedside manner and is very informative. He is calm and collected and makes you feel comfortable throughout all appointments and labour. Highly recommend!
