About Mr Sacheen Kumar

Mr Sacheen Kumar is a consultant in upper gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, specialising in the treatment of oesophagogastric cancer, GIST tumours, and benign conditions of the GI tract. He is also an honorary clinical senior lecturer at Imperial College London, and a team leader for research on upper GI surgical oncology at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). Mr Kumar qualified as a doctor from Imperial College London before undertaking general surgical training within the Deanery of London.

Mr. Kumar's specialist training in upper GI surgery then took place at the Royal Free Hospital London, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and University College Hospital London. After completing his training, he spent time learning minimally invasive techniques for treating Upper GI cancer at the National Cancer Centre in Seoul. His postgraduate research focussed on breath analysis for early diagnosis of upper GI cancer; he was awarded his PhD from Imperial College in 2014. Subsequently, he was appointed to the National Institute Health Research Clinical Lecturer Surgery position where recognition of his skillset left him elected to Member status with the Royal Society of Chemistry 2018.

I have had multiple appointments with Mr. Kumar over the last twelve months - including recent surgery. At all times, he has made sure that he has given me all the information I need, taking the time to explain the more complex aspects of my condition. Never patronising, but always keen to reassure and support. As a result, I completely trusted his suggested course of action - and my recent surgery was extremely successful. He clearly loves the specialised work that he does, which is particularly reassuring as a patient!

We contacted Dr Kumar after my father was told his tumour was inoperable and that he had one year to live. This was before my father had started any chemotherapy or immunotherapy treatment. Meeting with Dr Kumar was a completely different experience. Whilst previous doctors write my father off, Dr Kumar said that he would reconsider my father for surgery after he had completed his treatment. He took on my father's case, giving us hope. Thankfully the treatment was a resounding success and Dr Kumar operated on my father who is now doing very well. Dr Kumar saved my father's life and kept us all going when we felt we had no hope left.

I feel incredibly lucky to have been treated by Mr. Kumar. He is exceptionally talented and knowledgeable in his field, as well as being kind, compassionate, and understanding. My family and I came under Mr. Kumar’s care after my cancer was deemed inoperable by another hospital and I was given a terminal diagnosis. Mr. Kumar operated successfully and has truly given me my life back. Because of him, I have the opportunity to see my two small children grow up. I will be forever grateful to him; he hasn't just changed my life, he has changed theirs too.
