About Mr Omar Pathmanaban

Omar Pathmanaban is a renowned expert in skull base and pituitary surgery and is the lead endoscopic neurosurgeon in the nationally commissioned NF2-SWN and skull base proton multidisciplinary teams. He treats patients from across the UK and internationally for complex tumours and abnormalities in difficult to reach areas at the base of the brain, skull base, pituitary gland and junction of the brain and spine. The latest endoscopic, microsurgical and minimally invasive techniques and traditional open brain surgery approaches are tailored to optimally manage patients with personalised treatment.

In addition to this high volume and highly specialised practice, Omar is experienced in general cranial and spinal neurosurgery. In 2015, he won the prestigious Norman Dott Gold Medal for the most outstanding performance amongst graduating Neurosurgeons in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Omar holds a number of national positions within the profession. He is skull base lead for the Society of British Neurological Surgeons, secretary of the British Skull Base Society, serves on the medical advisory committee of the Pituitary Foundation, is neurosurgical expert to the NHS England proton beam therapy panel and sits on the council of the Royal Society of Medicine Clinical Neurosciences section.

Omar’s NHS practice is as Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences, which is the UKs highest volume Neurosurgery centre of excellence. He is also MAHSC Professor of Neurosurgery and Strategic Development lead at the Geoffrey Jefferson Brain Research Centre. He trained under the tutelage of world leading experts in London, Manchester, Oxford and Toronto and was the Marjorie Newsome Visiting Fellow at Barrow Neurological Institute, Phoenix, USA.

Omar is group leader of the Surgical Neuro-Oncology Manchester Laboratory (SNOMan). His research focuses on genes and immune cells in tumours affecting the deepest reaches of the brain and cranial nerves called the skull base. He also collaborates widely on team science projects related to inflammation in the brain, which has implications for diagnosis and treatment of brain injury and neurodegenerative conditions.  He is a widely published author and is frequently invited to speak at conferences, universites and hospitals accross the world. .
