About Dr Luis Amaya

I am a Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Specialist, I have been working in this field for thirty years. I have experience in the medical and surgical management of a broad spectrum of eye diseases in children, and during all this time I have always worked in leading teaching university hospitals.

I have a special interest in the management of Paediatric Strabsimus, surgical correction of adult strabismus with adjustable sutures, as well as the management of Paediatric Cataracts, and ocular trauma in children. I also have broad experience and special interest in the management of Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Teaching is one of my interests and I have always been mentoring and assisting junior doctors.

I havew done charity work in Haiti, Colombia, Tanzania, and the lifeline express initiative in China.

At present, I am the Head of Service of Paediatric Ophthalmology Unit at The Evelina Hospital (St Thomas' Foundation Trust in London).

Qualifications

I completed my Medical training in Bogotá, Colombia (South America) at The Rosario University, one of the most prestigious institutions in the country; I also did my residency in the same institution. Afterwards I did a fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology (UCL qualification) at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. I returned to Bogota where I prctised for 10 years, I was the Head of the Department of Paediatric Ophthalmology at The Misericordia Paediatric Hospital, where I was appointment Professor of Ophthalmology of the National University; I trained for 10 years a whole generation of jnuior doctors.

In 2000 I returned to the UK and did another Senior Research Fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

I am a member of The RoyalCollege of Ophthalmology, BIPOSA. (British isles Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Association), AAPOS (American Association of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Panamerican Society of Ophthalmology, and honorary member of The Colombian Society of Ophthalmology.
