Mr Jonathan Bell

Mr Bell founded Wimbledon Clinics as a partner, a multidisciplinary orthopaedic and sports medicine practice established in 2001 on the principle that exceptional patient care is best delivered by a highly experienced team rather than a sole practitioner. He is a specialist knee surgeon with extensive experience in all aspects of knee surgery, from advanced arthroscopic and ligament reconstruction techniques to joint preservation and knee replacement surgery.

A large part of Mr Bell’s practice involves helping active patients remain active. He treats everyone from recreational sports participants to elite and professional athletes, with particular expertise in ski-related injuries. As a passionate skier himself, he understands the physical and psychological challenges of returning to sport after injury. He receives referrals from across the UK and Europe and developed the unique “Return From Injury Ski Camp,” where he personally accompanies patients as they regain confidence returning to the slopes.

Mr Bell is widely respected for his thoughtful and highly personalised clinical approach. He is frequently consulted for second opinions by patients seeking clarity around complex knee problems, uncertain diagnoses, difficult treatment decisions, or recommendations for surgery. Many patients value his ability to interpret scans and symptoms in the context of their lifestyle, goals and long-term function, often helping them avoid unnecessary intervention while ensuring appropriate treatment is delivered efficiently when required.

His approach combines extensive surgical expertise with careful listening, clear communication and honest discussion of all available options. Mr Bell has been at the forefront of innovation throughout his career. During his NHS consultant practice from 1998–2010, he introduced techniques and treatments that became standard practice across the UK, including a drug protocol that made blood transfusion after knee replacement a rare event. He also established an award-winning musculoskeletal triage service using extended role physiotherapists, increasing outpatient capacity by over 1,000 appointments within six months.

He was among the first surgeons in the UK to perform a number of now well-established procedures, including patellofemoral replacement for isolated patellofemoral arthritis and trochleoplasty for recurrent patellofemoral instability. His specialist interest in patellofemoral disorders means he is often asked to assess patients with complex kneecap pain, instability, maltracking and failed previous treatments.

Mr Bell completed a prestigious Knee Fellowship in Melbourne in 1997 with internationally recognised knee surgeons John Bartlett and Julian Feller.
