James is an internationally recognised specialist knee surgeon based in Bristol and Bath, UK, and a founding partner of Knee Specialists. With a distinguished career focused on knee preservation and reconstruction, James is particularly renowned for his expertise in arthroscopic (“keyhole”) surgery, ligament reconstruction, meniscus and cartilage repair, and partial knee replacement. He is frequently referred complex cases from across the UK and abroad.
James is the current Co-Chairman of the ISAKOS Knee: Sports and Preservation Committee, and a former Chair of the ESSKA Collateral Ligaments Working Group. He is also a member of several prestigious international bodies, including the Meniscus International Network, the International Meniscus Reconstruction Forum, and the ACL Study Group—an invitation-only organisation with just a handful of UK surgeons elected to date. He also serves on the Steering Committee of the UK National Ligament Registry, committed to improving outcomes through continuous analysis of knee ligament surgery.
Further underscoring his leadership in the field, James has recently served on the steering committees for major international consensus statements, including the Formal EU-US Meniscus Rehabilitation Consensus and the ESSKA Consensus on the Management of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Revision in Adults. These roles highlight his direct involvement in shaping the latest global standards of care in knee surgery.
He completed his orthopaedic training in London and was awarded a Master of Surgery (MS) degree from Imperial College for his thesis on knee ligament injuries. His fellowship training included time at the Clinique du Sport in Bordeaux—France’s leading sports orthopaedic centre—where he advanced his skills in anatomical double-bundle ACL reconstruction and computer-assisted surgery. He later completed further training in partial knee replacement in the UK and spent an 18-month sabbatical at the International Knee and Joint Centre in Abu Dhabi, where he helped to develop a meniscal transplant service.
James has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and received multiple awards for his research across the UK, France, and Germany. He is a reviewer for leading journals including the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Bone & Joint Journal, KSSTA (Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy), and the ISAKOS Journal.
He is a past recipient of the BASK (British Association for Surgery of the Knee) President’s Medal, and regularly lectures and teaches around the world as an invited international speaker. His global academic and clinical engagements ensure he remains at the forefront of the latest developments in knee surgery.
Alongside his clinical practice, James acts as a consultant to several orthopaedic device companies and has helped develop surgical instruments and techniques for knee ligament reconstruction, cartilage treatment, and partial knee replacement.

One year check on replacement knee. Professional and thorough offering continued support if required.
I have been treated by Mr James Robinson for partial knee replacements on both knees & this visit was for the 1 year post op check up on the right knee. Mr Robinson is very friendly and immediately puts me at ease- this has been the case for the past (almost) 2 years since I started this journey. I feel that I come away from my appointments with total reassurance that he has given the best possible treatment- it does feel as if I am his only patient with the time and rapport that we have!

Thank you for your kind words. It’s great that you have done well following your Patellofemoral Joint partial knee replacements. Well done for putting on all the hard work rehabing
Operation went amazingly well, with great after care. Year on and my knee is feeling better than it has for years. Could not recommend Mr Robinson enough.
Reassuring manner all the way through from diagnosing problem, trying various treatments and eventual partial knee replacement 🙂 A year on and at review really pleased to say was best thing I had done, no pain and full use of knee again
I cannot recommend James highly enough. From the very first meet through to post-operative care, their approach was calm, clear and meticulous. The outcome has exceeded my expectations.
This visit was a one year follow up after a partial knee replacement Mr Robinson has been extremely helpful and supportive throughout the whole process. Pre-op he explained exactly what would be involved and managed my expectations of the outcome in a professional and reassuring way. I also felt well supported during the operation and in recovery. The procedure made an enormous difference to me and my lifestyle as I am now pain free and have regained mobility and the ability to exercise. I couldn’t be happier that I had the operation with Mr Robinson.
Very clear and informative, excellent share of information and clear explanation and clear explanation of future care.
James examined my son, arranged imaging and went through the options. After extensive consideration he undertook a complex meniscal repair. The surgery went very well and after 6 months of rehab he has got back to rugby for Hartpury and now Exeter Uni. We couldn’t be more impressed with the care received.
I was in excellent care with Mr Robinson - he provided me with clear options throughout and managed my expectations of results at each stage. He understood my goals with my surgery and helped me reach them.

Thank you so much for your kind comments. I’m delighted to hear your back playing rugby. All the best.
James has been a trusted colleague since the day we were both appointed. He is a world leader in ACL surgery and is also well known for his meniscal work. James is also a considered and logical opinion who would be a strong choice as your surgeon.
