James is an internationally recognised specialist knee surgeon based in Bristol and Bath, UK, and a founding partner of Knee Specialists. With a distinguished career focused on knee preservation and reconstruction, James is particularly renowned for his expertise in arthroscopic (“keyhole”) surgery, ligament reconstruction, meniscus and cartilage repair, and partial knee replacement. He is frequently referred complex cases from across the UK and abroad.
James is the current Co-Chairman of the ISAKOS Knee: Sports and Preservation Committee, and a former Chair of the ESSKA Collateral Ligaments Working Group. He is also a member of several prestigious international bodies, including the Meniscus International Network, the International Meniscus Reconstruction Forum, and the ACL Study Group—an invitation-only organisation with just a handful of UK surgeons elected to date. He also serves on the Steering Committee of the UK National Ligament Registry, committed to improving outcomes through continuous analysis of knee ligament surgery.
Further underscoring his leadership in the field, James has recently served on the steering committees for major international consensus statements, including the Formal EU-US Meniscus Rehabilitation Consensus and the ESSKA Consensus on the Management of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Revision in Adults. These roles highlight his direct involvement in shaping the latest global standards of care in knee surgery.
He completed his orthopaedic training in London and was awarded a Master of Surgery (MS) degree from Imperial College for his thesis on knee ligament injuries. His fellowship training included time at the Clinique du Sport in Bordeaux—France’s leading sports orthopaedic centre—where he advanced his skills in anatomical double-bundle ACL reconstruction and computer-assisted surgery. He later completed further training in partial knee replacement in the UK and spent an 18-month sabbatical at the International Knee and Joint Centre in Abu Dhabi, where he helped to develop a meniscal transplant service.
James has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and received multiple awards for his research across the UK, France, and Germany. He is a reviewer for leading journals including the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Bone & Joint Journal, KSSTA (Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy), and the ISAKOS Journal.
He is a past recipient of the BASK (British Association for Surgery of the Knee) President’s Medal, and regularly lectures and teaches around the world as an invited international speaker. His global academic and clinical engagements ensure he remains at the forefront of the latest developments in knee surgery.
Alongside his clinical practice, James acts as a consultant to several orthopaedic device companies and has helped develop surgical instruments and techniques for knee ligament reconstruction, cartilage treatment, and partial knee replacement.

The staff were very professional, explained everything thing very clearly.
James had always set reasonable expectations for the results of my partial knee replacements and so to be able to have such great results and to have a new lease of life is a testament to James’ professionalism and expertise He is always friendly and welcoming, with a way of explaining next steps and procedures in an understandable way I have truly been lucky to have had such a lovely consultant help me through my treatment, surgeries and after care and I will be sorry to not have to see him again

Thank you for your very kind comments. It’s been a pleasure looking after you.
12 month check up on TLKR. TRKR was also performed on 30/4/26
Overall happy with my full meniscus surgery journey, I'm 6 months out and feeling great.
Mr Robinson saw me after I'd been diagnosed with a complex meniscus tear. He talked me through the options and pros and cons.
James has been amazing from start to finish. He has made the injury process as easy as it could be and has always been reassuring! I’ve felt in very safe hands! Thank you !!
Follow up from an acl injury. Very clear and compassionate
James has been brilliant from start to finish and I would highly recommend. He has always taken the time to provide a full explanation and answer all my questions. In addition, the surgery went very well with no issues and my knee is on the way to making a full recovery. Above all, I believe James is not only highly knowledgeable and skilled but genuinely cares and wants the best for his patients
I became a patient of Mr Robinson's after rupturing and ACL playing rugby. Mr Robinson performed a successful ACL reconstruction surgery and following his recovery programme I was running and playing rugby again without any pain or discomfort within 12 months post surgery. Unfortunately I have recently had another rugby knee injury but I did not hesitate in immediately returning to see Mr Robinson as I knew I'd be in safe hands.
One year check on replacement knee. Professional and thorough offering continued support if required.
Mr Robinson is one of the premiere soft tissue knee surgeons in the UK. His reputation at providing holistic care, coupled with excellent results places him as one of the leading surgeons in the UK. He is experienced and capable of providing tertiary level care for complex cases and receives referrals from all over the world. It was a pleasure to be trained by James, and I enjoy collaborating with him regarding complex cases.
