About Mr James Murray

Mr James Murray is an experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who has been practising in Bristol since 2007. He holds an elective NHS consultant post at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, North Bristol NHS Trust, where he serves as Specialty Lead for Knee Surgery. His leadership roles have included Director for Elective Orthopaedics from 2017 to 2020 and Director for Trauma between 2008 and 2012. He is also an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Bristol Medical School.

Mr Murray studied medicine at Cambridge University before completing basic surgical training in Oxford. He then spent time in Newcastle undertaking research in knee and hip surgery. He entered orthopaedic specialist training in the Wessex Deanery, where he was awarded the EndoPlus Knee Prize in 2005. In 2006 he completed a prestigious fellowship at the Australian Institute of Musculoskeletal Surgery in Sydney under the mentorship of Merv Cross, with additional time spent learning from renowned surgeons Leo Pinczewski, David Wood and Justin Roe. That same year he received the British Association of Surgery for the Knee travelling fellowship.

Mr Murray has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and wrote A to Z of Musculoskeletal and Trauma Radiology, published in 2008. He serves as a reviewer for several leading scientific journals, including The Bone and Joint Journal and The Knee. He leads multiple clinical trials and collaborates as a co-investigator on others, maintaining an active role within the Bristol Knee Group, a recognised hub of research and education in knee surgery. Nationally and internationally, he contributes to guideline-setting groups such as BASK working groups and the International Consensus Meeting on Prosthetic Joint Infection. He has been the BASK Education Representative on the BASK Executive since 2019.

Mr Murray provides a comprehensive knee surgery service, managing the full range of conditions from sports injuries to complex degenerative disease. His expertise includes ligament reconstruction, meniscal and cartilage surgery, osteotomy, partial, total and revision knee replacement. He leads the Bristol service for prosthetic joint infection of the knee, working within a multidisciplinary team at Southmead Hospital. He is well known for his focus on early post-operative mobility and enhanced recovery, incorporating minimally invasive, muscle-sparing techniques, avoidance of tourniquets and the use of local anaesthetic infiltration to support faster and more comfortable rehabilitation.

I had an excellent experience from start to finish of my treatment. Mr Murray thoroughly discussed the pros and cons of different treatment options and gained my full confidence with his precise approach. I accepted his advice to have surgery and I am delighted with the outcome.

James explains everything in detail, I feel I can ask questions and not be rushed. I had my left knee replacement in 2023 and am more than happy for James to replace my right knee. Janes has changed my life, I can now walk without constant pain and look forward to my next operation.
