About Mr James Crosbie

Mr James Crosbie is a Consultant General Surgeon specialising in Lower GI Surgery. He was awarded the Arthur Jacob Open Medical Scholarship and qualified in medicine from the National University of Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He also completed electives in the United States at the world renowned John Hopkins Hospital and the Mayo Clinic and graduated in 1996.

Mr Crosbie also completed a Master's degree which included research on pelvic floor function. He later completed his higher surgical training in London as well as a Colorectal Surgery fellowship at University College Hospital and St Thomas' Hospital, London.

Mr Crosbie was first appointed as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in 2009 at University College London Hospital. During this role he became the site lead for Undergraduate Surgical Teaching on the Bloomsbury campus and was also the Chair of the Surgical MMG. As lead he introduced a new undergraduate curriculum and received awards for best teacher.

He still has an active role in teaching as well as research and clinical trials. He has research interests in the use of microspheres for treating anal fistula and stem cells in anal sphincter reconstruction surgery.

He is based in London and currently sees private patients at the following locations:

  • Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth
  • Princess Grace Hospital
  • The Harley Street Clinic Diagnostic Centre

His clinical practice focuses on the treatment of lower GI conditions, in particular colorectal and anal cancer, as well as the use of endoscopy and advanced proctology to treat these conditions.

During his career, Mr Crosbie and his colleagues at University College London Hospital introduced new anorectal techniques, including: abdominal wall reconstruction for recurrent incisional hernia and artificial bowel sphincter.

Additionally, in his NHS Trust, Mr Crosbie is Surgical Lead for Anal Cancer at and leads a clinic that offers specialist services for the management anal intra-epithelial neoplasia.
