About Mr James Arbuthnot

Mr James Arbuthnot is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist focus on knee surgery. He has been practising as a consultant since 2008 and dedicates his clinical practice exclusively to the diagnosis and treatment of knee conditions.

Mr Arbuthnot treats both younger and older patients, managing sports-related injuries such as ligament tears, cartilage injuries and fractures, as well as degenerative conditions including osteoarthritis of the knee. He has a particular interest in the treatment of early arthritis, where emerging surgical and non-surgical techniques can help reduce pain, preserve joint function and delay the need for joint replacement.

He performs a high volume of knee procedures each year, including total and partial knee replacements and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions. On average, he carries out between 75 and 100 knee replacements annually, along with 70 to 75 ACL reconstructions. He also manages complex cases requiring revision knee replacement surgery.

Mr Arbuthnot also offers robotic-arm assisted joint replacement surgery using the Mako system, which allows highly precise planning and placement of knee implants. These procedures are available at Spire Little Aston Hospital and Spire Parkway Hospital.

He works as a surgical partner at the Midland Knee Clinic, a specialist centre dedicated to the treatment of knee injuries and conditions. The clinic provides both surgical and non-surgical care for patients locally in the Midlands as well as nationally and internationally, with outpatient and surgical services based in Solihull and Sutton Coldfield. Through his focused approach and extensive experience, Mr Arbuthnot aims to deliver optimal outcomes and long-term function for patients with knee problems.

Mr James Arbuthnot was very professional and clear. I finally had answers to the years of suffering with my knee. He had also explained what was happening with my opposite knee clearly. I hope to see him or a consultant as professional and knowledgeable as him for future operations.

From initial conversation with Mr Arbuthnot, he took the time to understand the injury and my drive for getting it fixed. This made it easier to explain the approach being taken and for me to agree with it. His manner before and after the surgery was equally clear and well explained. The support from Kirsty, the practice manager, was also excellent.
