Mr James Arbuthnot is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist focus on knee surgery. He has been practising as a consultant since 2008 and dedicates his clinical practice exclusively to the diagnosis and treatment of knee conditions.
Mr Arbuthnot treats both younger and older patients, managing sports-related injuries such as ligament tears, cartilage injuries and fractures, as well as degenerative conditions including osteoarthritis of the knee. He has a particular interest in the treatment of early arthritis, where emerging surgical and non-surgical techniques can help reduce pain, preserve joint function and delay the need for joint replacement.
He performs a high volume of knee procedures each year, including total and partial knee replacements and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions. On average, he carries out between 75 and 100 knee replacements annually, along with 70 to 75 ACL reconstructions. He also manages complex cases requiring revision knee replacement surgery.
Mr Arbuthnot also offers robotic-arm assisted joint replacement surgery using the Mako system, which allows highly precise planning and placement of knee implants. These procedures are available at Spire Little Aston Hospital and Spire Parkway Hospital.
He works as a surgical partner at the Midland Knee Clinic, a specialist centre dedicated to the treatment of knee injuries and conditions. The clinic provides both surgical and non-surgical care for patients locally in the Midlands as well as nationally and internationally, with outpatient and surgical services based in Solihull and Sutton Coldfield. Through his focused approach and extensive experience, Mr Arbuthnot aims to deliver optimal outcomes and long-term function for patients with knee problems.

Mr Arbuthnot was extremely friendly and professional, taking time to listen and understand my concerns as well as explaining the issues and the next step towards my knee problem.
At 64 and after several knee injuries in my 20’s I had severe arthritis in both knees. Walking for more than 20 mins was very painful as was going down slopes and stairs. Mr Arbuthnot proposed TKR for both knees at the Spire Solihull and I had the first in March 2024 and the second in October 2024. This had totally changed my life, I am back to long walks and fell walking with no pain and the range of movement is great.

Really pleased to hear it. Thanks for the review
Mr Arbuthnot was very personable and clear in his explanations. I was impressed by the fact he observed a great deal about my problem while I was walking towards him from the waiting area. His diagnosis even before x-rays and MRI scan was pretty accurate. He offered his advice and was happy to discuss NHS alternatives.
Add a follow up after operation everything was displayed clearly no problems. The process has been excellent.

Great news
Injection carried out excellently but was without a local anaesthetic. Very painful experience. Would only have another injection if it was done with a prior local anaesthetic.
I discussed options on managing knee pain following a fall. I was considering the N-Stride injection. However after several weeks of physio and extensive exercise I felt no action was required at this time as my knee pain was very much reduced.
My son had meniscus surgery with Mr Arbuthnot and he had a very positive experience. The surgery was successful and his recovery was exactly what he was told to expect. Mr Arbuthnot explained the surgery beforehand and afterwards he brought the internal photographs of the knee to show what had been done. He is a kind doctor who is honest and excellent at his job. I would highly recommend him to other people.
