Mr Abeezar Sarela

Mr Abeezar Sarela is a Consultant Surgeon at Nuffield Hospital and Spire Hospital, as well as for the NHS. He specialises in three areas of Gastrointestinal Surgery:

1. Bariatric Surgery (Weight loss)
2. Operations for Gallstones, Acid Reflux, Hernia, Achalasia and Gastroparesis
3. Operations for cancers of the oesophagus and stomach

He has extensive experience in laparoscopy (keyhole surgery), using this method for most of his operations.

Mr Sarela studied medicine at Seth GS Medical College, Mumbai, India and completed his General Surgery training at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. He completed further training at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School (now part of Imperial College) and Hammersmith Hospital, as part of scholarship from the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

In 1996 he obtained his diploma in Surgical Science (MSc) from the University of London with a distinction, before working as a Registrar in Surgery at Ashford Hospital in Middlesex. In 1997, he was appointed as a Lecturer in the School of Medicine at the University of Leeds and an Honorary Specialist Registrar in Surgery at St James's University Hospital. He was awarded a MD by the University of Leeds for his research in molecular genetics of bowel cancer and was made a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in 2001.

Mr Sarela then went on to train in cancer surgery in New York as part of an International Surgical Oncology Fellowship. He then returned to the UK and was appointed as a Consultant in Upper GI Surgery in the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in October 2003. His time is now split between his NHS work at St James's University Hospital and his private clinics.

As well as his clinical work, Mr Sarela is actively involved in teaching, training and research. He has published over 50 papers in medical journals and is currently studying for a PhD in Medical Law.
