About Miss Laura Spanu
Miss Laura Spanu is a Consultant General Surgeon at North Middlesex University Hospital, London, where she has worked since 2014. She is currently Clinical Lead for General and Emergency Surgery and has been on the GMC Specialist Register since 2009.
She qualified as a General Surgeon at Barcelona Clinic Hospital, Spain, in 2006, following comprehensive training in general, emergency and laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery, as well as hepatobiliary and pancreatic (HPB) surgery. From 2006 to 2013, she practised as a Consultant General and Upper GI Laparoscopic Surgeon in Spain before relocating to the UK.
Miss Spanu expanded her subspecialty expertise through fellowships in London, including hepatobiliary, pancreatic and liver transplant surgery at the Royal Free Hospital (2011–2012) and trauma, emergency and endocrine surgery at King’s College Hospital (2013–2014). She also trained in laparoscopic bariatric surgery at Whittington Hospital.
At North Middlesex University Hospital, she has been instrumental in developing the Emergency Surgery Unit and leads a high-volume “hot gallbladder” service for urgent and elective cholecystectomy. Her clinical interests include upper GI benign biliary disease, advanced laparoscopic surgery, abdominal wall hernia repair (including complex reconstructions) and benign perianal conditions.
In addition to her NHS role, Miss Spanu is an Assistant Professor in Surgery at St George’s University, Grenada, and trains future surgeons as a clinical and educational supervisor with University College London.

When I was taken to hospital, I was in excruciating much pain and also confused due to the pain suddenly coming on. Once the problem was identified, the surgeon explained it in a way to help me understand. She was so empathetic and was able to quickly identify the level of stress I was facing due to work. She managed my anxieties, help me gain clarity on the problem in hand and understand the plan. This contributed to trusting her with my life in my vulnerable moment. Her calmness reassured me and quickly learned she came with a level of expertise. Everything she said she did and worked in a timely manner to save my bowels, which she absolutely got right. I had severe pain in my right abdomen, I had a CT scan that showed something near my small intestine. I was immediately taken into surgery and was operated on. It was later discovered that I had a cyst on my right ovaries which strangled it and cause it to die and turn black, Laura Spanu was lovely enough to take out the cyst and dead ovary to prevent further damage. Dr Spanu patiently and lovingly performed the surgery with care and love.
