Mr Michael Wilson is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon with extensive experience in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery. He specialises in gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Practising privately at Dundee Outpatient Centre and Kings Park Hospital in Stirling, he also serves as the Clinical Lead for General Surgery at NHS Forth Valley. Additionally, Mr Wilson holds a visiting position as a Major Trauma Surgeon at St Mary’s Hospital Major Trauma Centre, part of the Imperial College Healthcare Trust in London.
Mr Wilson is highly regarded for his expertise in laparoscopic gallbladder removal, often sought out by patients requiring swift and effective treatment for gallbladder-related conditions. His skill in hernia surgery includes both groin and abdominal wall hernias, and as the lead for the complex hernia regional multidisciplinary team, he offers advanced surgical techniques such as abdominal wall reconstruction supported by botulinum toxin injections. He is also experienced in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, diagnosing and treating conditions such as acid reflux, non-cardiac chest pain, swallowing difficulties, and stomach pain. His training in anti-reflux surgery places him among a select number of surgeons in Scotland able to provide surgical treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease and achalasia.
Committed to holistic patient care, Mr Wilson believes in treating the individual as a whole rather than focusing solely on the surgical condition. He works closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes nurses, radiologists, anaesthetists and physiotherapists to ensure each patient receives comprehensive care before, during and after surgery. He also provides guidance on lifestyle changes such as smoking cessation and weight management, helping patients reduce their peri-operative risks and improve their long-term recovery and wellbeing.
Mr Wilson is a strong advocate for research and innovation in surgery. He actively contributes to high-impact studies and promotes the involvement of patients in shaping future healthcare services. His research work plays a role in developing national clinical guidelines, refining surgical procedures, and improving overall standards in general and gastrointestinal surgery. He is also known for his inclusive care of patients with higher body mass index, tailoring his surgical approach to their specific needs and offering guidance to support their health both before and after surgery.
In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Wilson is deeply involved in surgical education and mentorship. He is a faculty member of the Definitive Surgical Trauma Skills course, a consultant appraiser, and a contributing member of national surgical organisations such as the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and the British Benign Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers.
Mr Wilson also serves in the Royal Navy Reserves as a Consultant Surgeon within the Healthcare & Medical specialisation, where he holds the role of SO1 Medical Officers. He is currently the only consultant general surgeon in the Royal Navy Reserves, providing specialist care in military settings and contributing to the medical readiness of UK service personnel.

Mr Michael Wilson is professional, clear, friendly, and reassuring with patients. He gives full explanations of complex surgical procedures like inguinal hernia repair and laparoscopic cholecystectomy, ensuring patients feel informed and confident. His comprehensive care offers thorough pre-operative assessment, strong post-operative support, and notable personal follow-up communication. Gallbladder procedures and various hernia repairs are key themes in patient feedback.
Mr Wilson is undoubtedly one of life’s gentlemen. From my first consultation with him to discuss my surgical needs, he treated me with respect, understanding and a genuine care that I found very refreshing. He explained everything in great detail and in a language that was understandable but not condescending. It was obvious to me at that time he had a genuine empathy with his patient, namely, me. He performed a laparoscopic cholecystectomy on me at Kings Park Hospital, Stirling. I was, and this can only be described as understatement, delighted with the procedure. I felt only minimum discomfort in the days immediately post-operation. Mr Wilson’s skill and gentleness is obvious by my quick recovery. I recently had a post operative consultation with him and was shown the same professional, caring attention that I have received throughout. I intend to use Mr Wilson in the future for further non related surgery, and I would highly recommend him to anyone. Thank you sir, you opened my eyes to what health care can be.
A very pleasant person who couldn't have explained my situation any clearer, operation went really well with basically no pain killers required after.
From first meeting felt at ease, operation when great from start to finish and everything was handled professionally
Michael made you feel at ease straight away. He explained everything in simple terms, the pros and cons, the good and bad possible outcomes and made me feel good about my surgery. The day of surgery I had concerns about an incision that was going to cut through a tattoo and he said he could relocate the incision to below it and that's what he did. For that alone I am forever greatful. All up Michale treated you as a person and not a number, and I couldn't find fault in anything he done from start to finish.
Great experience, put me at ease, excellent explanations across pre,l/post and operation itself.
The doctor saw me in clinic to discuss keyhole surgery to remove my gallbladder following a blocked bile duct and acute pancreatitis. He explained in detail why surgery was required and gave me leaflets to explain the procedure . Subsequently I had my gallbladder removed. On the day of the procedure I spoke with Mr Wilson prior to the procedure and then twice after the procedure had taken place. On the day of my discharge from hospital, Mr Wilson telephoned to check that everything had gone well and to advise about the removal of dressings. I returned for a follow up appointment with Mr Wilson to review progress since my operation when wounds were checked.
Double femoral hernia dealt with honestly and clearly. Had full trust in Mr Wilson. Day patient.
As this was my first ever time going under the knife so to speak, to say I was nervous was an understatement. After meeting with Dr Wilson I knew he was the man for the job and had every confidence in him. He advised that it was a bigger job than I had suspected and open surgery was required rather than keyhole. Reassurance was given along with advice on lifestyle changes. I was fortunate enough to get offered a cancellation with less than 24 hours notice and saved on more worry and stress. The operation went well, staff were great with a follow up phone call from the hospital and Dr Wilson. Just had my 4 week check up everything is fine. Dr Wilson is very down to earth and informed me he was worried about my recovery and pleased with the results. “ You done well for your first rodeo” thanks, highly recommended.

Great feedback, glad it all went well, thanks for taking the time to submit this.
All good. Service great.

Glad you were happy with your care
Mr Michael Wilson was both professional and very supportive throughout a very stressful process. He additionally, greatly helped me with his ability to explain all the details in manageable chunks so that I understood what was happening and going to happen. His accurate diagnosis (borne out by evidence) shows he is clearly a highly competent expert in his field. I cannot thank him enough. Gaele M. PhD
