About Mr Michael Wilson

Mr Michael Wilson is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon with extensive experience in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery. He specialises in gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Practising privately at Dundee Outpatient Centre and Kings Park Hospital in Stirling, he also serves as the Clinical Lead for General Surgery at NHS Forth Valley. Additionally, Mr Wilson holds a visiting position as a Major Trauma Surgeon at St Mary’s Hospital Major Trauma Centre, part of the Imperial College Healthcare Trust in London.

Mr Wilson is highly regarded for his expertise in laparoscopic gallbladder removal, often sought out by patients requiring swift and effective treatment for gallbladder-related conditions. His skill in hernia surgery includes both groin and abdominal wall hernias, and as the lead for the complex hernia regional multidisciplinary team, he offers advanced surgical techniques such as abdominal wall reconstruction supported by botulinum toxin injections. He is also experienced in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, diagnosing and treating conditions such as acid reflux, non-cardiac chest pain, swallowing difficulties, and stomach pain. His training in anti-reflux surgery places him among a select number of surgeons in Scotland able to provide surgical treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease and achalasia.

Committed to holistic patient care, Mr Wilson believes in treating the individual as a whole rather than focusing solely on the surgical condition. He works closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes nurses, radiologists, anaesthetists and physiotherapists to ensure each patient receives comprehensive care before, during and after surgery. He also provides guidance on lifestyle changes such as smoking cessation and weight management, helping patients reduce their peri-operative risks and improve their long-term recovery and wellbeing.

Mr Wilson is a strong advocate for research and innovation in surgery. He actively contributes to high-impact studies and promotes the involvement of patients in shaping future healthcare services. His research work plays a role in developing national clinical guidelines, refining surgical procedures, and improving overall standards in general and gastrointestinal surgery. He is also known for his inclusive care of patients with higher body mass index, tailoring his surgical approach to their specific needs and offering guidance to support their health both before and after surgery.

In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Wilson is deeply involved in surgical education and mentorship. He is a faculty member of the Definitive Surgical Trauma Skills course, a consultant appraiser, and a contributing member of national surgical organisations such as the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and the British Benign Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers.

Mr Wilson also serves in the Royal Navy Reserves as a Consultant Surgeon within the Healthcare & Medical specialisation, where he holds the role of SO1 Medical Officers. He is currently the only consultant general surgeon in the Royal Navy Reserves, providing specialist care in military settings and contributing to the medical readiness of UK service personnel.

I had my one-month post-operative review with Mr Michael Wilson and was very impressed by his professionalism and clarity. He explained everything in a very straightforward and efficient way, which made me feel reassured and well cared for. He also kindly offered to submit my private hospital records to the NHS on my behalf, which I really appreciated. Before my surgery, when I asked about having an MRCP, he thoughtfully suggested that a full contrast CT scan of the abdomen would be more comprehensive. This gave me a more thorough pre-operative assessment and helped me feel much more confident about the treatment plan. I am very grateful for his expertise and considerate approach, and would highly recommend him.

Michael Wilson was fantastic, warm, friendly and professional, I have to say his commutation was the best ever… so prompt on the ball, answering me with any questions I had via text and email. Updating me with my results straight away by telephone making sure I understood everything. Spoke to me in clear easy to understand terminology throughout the process. Can’t recommend Michael enough if I had another gallbladder I’d get it out! Thank you

It's a shame you don't have a second gallbladder. I would have been happy to help with that one too. Jokes aside - thank you for your kind feedback.

I had a laparoscopic cholecystectomy done at King’s Park Hospital Stirling by Mr Wilson in 30th January 2026, I couldn’t be any happier with Mr Wilson’s treatment of me from my first consultation to the day of the surgery itself and my post op consultation. I found Mr Wilson to be very professional and caring, explaining everything very clearly.

Mr Wilson a highly skilled surgeon who conducted my care with professionalism at all times. I was safe in his care. He was also very kind, and provided a service that reminded me of a bygone era where I felt he actually took the time to listen to me and spoke to me as if my worries mattered. He and his team all practiced this ethos and I would not hesitate to recommend them.
