About Mr Michael Wilson

Mr Michael Wilson is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon with extensive experience in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery. He specialises in gallbladder surgery, hernia repair, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Practising privately at Dundee Outpatient Centre and Kings Park Hospital in Stirling, he also serves as the Clinical Lead for General Surgery at NHS Forth Valley. Additionally, Mr Wilson holds a visiting position as a Major Trauma Surgeon at St Mary’s Hospital Major Trauma Centre, part of the Imperial College Healthcare Trust in London.

Mr Wilson is highly regarded for his expertise in laparoscopic gallbladder removal, often sought out by patients requiring swift and effective treatment for gallbladder-related conditions. His skill in hernia surgery includes both groin and abdominal wall hernias, and as the lead for the complex hernia regional multidisciplinary team, he offers advanced surgical techniques such as abdominal wall reconstruction supported by botulinum toxin injections. He is also experienced in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, diagnosing and treating conditions such as acid reflux, non-cardiac chest pain, swallowing difficulties, and stomach pain. His training in anti-reflux surgery places him among a select number of surgeons in Scotland able to provide surgical treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease and achalasia.

Committed to holistic patient care, Mr Wilson believes in treating the individual as a whole rather than focusing solely on the surgical condition. He works closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes nurses, radiologists, anaesthetists and physiotherapists to ensure each patient receives comprehensive care before, during and after surgery. He also provides guidance on lifestyle changes such as smoking cessation and weight management, helping patients reduce their peri-operative risks and improve their long-term recovery and wellbeing.

Mr Wilson is a strong advocate for research and innovation in surgery. He actively contributes to high-impact studies and promotes the involvement of patients in shaping future healthcare services. His research work plays a role in developing national clinical guidelines, refining surgical procedures, and improving overall standards in general and gastrointestinal surgery. He is also known for his inclusive care of patients with higher body mass index, tailoring his surgical approach to their specific needs and offering guidance to support their health both before and after surgery.

In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Wilson is deeply involved in surgical education and mentorship. He is a faculty member of the Definitive Surgical Trauma Skills course, a consultant appraiser, and a contributing member of national surgical organisations such as the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and the British Benign Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers.

Mr Wilson also serves in the Royal Navy Reserves as a Consultant Surgeon within the Healthcare & Medical specialisation, where he holds the role of SO1 Medical Officers. He is currently the only consultant general surgeon in the Royal Navy Reserves, providing specialist care in military settings and contributing to the medical readiness of UK service personnel.

Was made fully aware of risks in order to make informed choice re surgery. Operation went well and wounds healed well. Surgeon checked on me a couple of hours after surgery and also called me next day to check how I was. Overall a great experience and I would recommend Dr Wilson.

I recently underwent gallbladder removal by Mr Wilson, the service from initial appointment through to the surgery itself and final appointment was first class. I felt very at ease and confident in the operation given I had never had anything in the past. Everything was explained fully and the care from the staff at the nuffeild was also great. I’d highly recommend.

Had spent time in hospital and had doctors with different opinions as to what was wrong with me. I had to wait a year for a follow up so decided after some research to request Dr Wilson’s assistance. He records the meeting and then sends a letter describing in great detail what was discussed. He confirmed what one of the hospital doctors though that I had gallstones and a diseased gallbladder. Within a week I had the operation conducted by Dr Wilson and within a further two weeks I had suitably recovered to be signed off.

Had a routine hernia surgery with Michael. Every stage of the process was handled professionally and efficiently - through initial consultation, procedure and post-op review.

I had an inguinal hernia and it was horrible and so restricting and all of a sudden my life as I knew it had changed , I am not a rich man by any means and tried to go down the NHS route and then realised the waiting time for the initial scan before you even go on to the actual op waiting list was ridiculous and decided I had to get it done privately even though financially it was going to be a blow , but I came across Michaels profile and I’m so glad I did , it has been 4 months since my op now and although I was an anxious overthinking mess before I met him he made me feel so at ease and during our first meet he went trough all the medical stuff and then looked me in the eye and said “don’t worry I’ll get you fixed” and that was everything to me at the time . The operation was seamless and the recovery too with no issues whatsoever and I really wasn’t expecting that , so if you are reading this and haven’t made a decision to go through with the op yet or have to decide what surgeon to choose please go for it and Michael will sort you out , good luck ❤️
