Mr Matthias Zilbauer

Mr Matthias Zilbauer is a paediatric gastroenterologist. Their research focuses on intestinal epithelial stem cell biology in children, exploring its role in development, health, and related diseases.

They are particularly interested in how epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation, influence gene expression and cellular function in the human intestinal epithelium. This research aims to understand how epigenetic reprogramming affects the development and progression of diseases.

Their team utilises human mucosa-derived intestinal epithelial organoids as a translational research tool. This allows them to study disease processes and translate findings from the laboratory to clinical practice. They are also involved in developing clinical biomarkers to guide treatment decisions for children diagnosed with inflammatory bowel diseases.
