About Dr Mark Philip Cassar
Dr Mark Cassar is a Consultant Cardiologist with specialist expertise in advanced cardiac imaging, including echocardiography, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT. He sees patients with a wide range of heart symptoms and cardiovascular conditions, including chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, heart valve disease, heart failure, cardiomyopathy, hypertension, high cholesterol and cardiovascular risk assessment.
His approach is based on careful clinical assessment, clear explanation and the appropriate use of cardiac investigations. Consultations usually include a detailed history, examination and discussion of the most suitable next steps. Where appropriate, an echocardiogram can be performed on the same day, with further imaging arranged if needed.
Dr Cassar trained in cardiology at Oxford University Hospitals and completed a PhD in cardiac imaging at the University of Oxford, where his research focused on the effects of viral infections on the heart. He graduated in medicine from the University of Malta.
He holds the highest level of accreditation in echocardiography, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT. This combination allows him to advise on, perform and interpret the imaging tests most relevant to each patient’s clinical presentation.
Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Cassar holds several national and international professional roles. He is an Executive Committee Member of the British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging, a Taskforce and Leadership Working Group Member of the British Society of Echocardiography, a National Echocardiography Examiner, and the UK echocardiography representative to the European Society of Cardiology.
He has published extensively in peer-reviewed medical journals, including The Lancet, and remains actively involved in cardiovascular research and education. His clinical work brings together general cardiology and advanced imaging to support accurate diagnosis, risk assessment and treatment planning.

My experience was absolutely first class. It was a pleasure to meet Dr Cassar.
Very friendly and reassuring in guiding me through the medically induced stress test and explaining all he was doing. It was an amazing experience with Dr Cassar managing to recreate my symptoms on the stress echocardiogram and find answers.
I was feeling very anxious on arrival but Mr Cassar put me at ease. He was very caring and explained everything he was doing during the procedure and why. At the end he went through all the photos explaining them thoroughly with my husband and I. I left feeling at ease and would recommend Dr Cassar. Thank you

I had a letter requesting me to attend an outpatients apointment for cardiology. I was unsure why and obviously I was very concerned and worried when attending the appointment. Dr Cassar was very professional and explained everything very clearly. I was not felt to feel foolish about asking questions and every question was answered in detail. I was given very good advice about nutrition and living a healthy life. I went in with trepidation but came out of the appointment extremely happy that everything had been clearly explained and my concerns had been treated with clarity in a friendly, professional manner. I was made to feel like a person that mattered.
Dr Cassar explained facts with clarity and projected an attitude of friendliness, humour and genuine interest in me, the patient. A faultless experience, thank you.
