About Dr. Marina Fernando

Miss Marina Fernando is a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Broomfield Hospital, specialising in high-risk obstetrics, acute gynaecology, early pregnancy care, and outpatient hysteroscopy. As the Clinical Lead for her department and for Early Pregnancy and Acute gynaecology, she is committed to enhancing the safety and quality of healthcare for women.

In addition to her hospital duties, Miss Fernando serves as the Regional Quality Improvement Lead for UCL Partners (Health Innovation Network, NHS). In this role, she has spearheaded significant maternity initiatives across London and Essex, including PReCePT (aiming to reduce cerebral palsy in preterm infants), BSOTS (improving maternity triage), and MEWS (tools for identifying mothers in distress).

After earning her degree from Barts and The London School of Medicine in 2005 and finishing her specialty training, she began her career as a consultant at Homerton University Hospital. There, she established birth reflection clinics, enhanced postnatal and ambulatory gynaecology services, and created a program that provides immediate postpartum contraception, such as implants, coils, or oral contraceptives.

Her clinical passions include managing menstrual disorders and postmenopausal health, as well as conducting gynaecology and early pregnancy scans. She also performs outpatient gynaecological procedures like hysteroscopy and surgical management of miscarriage, with a focus on improving patient comfort. She has been a key figure in improving ambulatory gynaecology services in both the NHS and private sectors, ensuring safe and effective outpatient care.

Miss Fernando is dedicated to teaching and mentoring future medical professionals and frequently presents her research at conferences. She is passionate about merging clinical expertise with service innovation to better women's health throughout their lives.

From my first appointment to my last I was always made to feel at ease, and heard. All of my questions answered with compassion and never once made to feel like it was all in my head. I’ve never had surgery before and the whole team made me feel at ease and very comfortable. The aftercare was brilliant and although I hope I won’t need to visit again, I won’t be worried about doing so if I have to.

Having had difficulty with my local GP, I booked an appointment to see Dr Fernando and she was just brilliant. Having gone through a series of traumatic events including a missed miscarriage, the discussions, advice, and the reassurance she provided not only through scans but through conversation, were second to none and I felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders when I left her consulting room. Something I had been longing for since December 2025.

Booked with Dr Fernando after she was highly recommended by friend. So glad I did. Had a very painful experience with another gyne and wasn't looking forward to having to see another one again. Dr Fernando is professional, kind and very caring and thorough. She made me feel at ease, heard, seen as an individual and looked after. I would highly highly recommend. The staff from reception and throughout my visit were amazing; thank you all Thank you for taking the fear out of seeing the gyne.

Dr Fernando was outstanding from my first to last appointment with her! At my first appointment, of my being an emotional Menopausal wreak and having previously had an extremely painful hysterocopy with a different doctor, Dr Fernando was wonderful at listening, going through my medical history with me, as well as understanding and caring of the problems I had been through. Dr Fernando was then very clear in explaining the options available to me to move forward in dealing with these issues. I had another hysterocopy, by Dr Fernando this time, under general anaesthesia, as well as insertion of the Minerva Coil. Before the procedure date came around, she also prescribed HRT Oestrogel. The procedure day was successful and again, Dr Fernando was brilliant from start to finish. On my last appointment with Dr Fernando, I had returned to being my old self again and was thrilled! I cannot rate Dr Fernando high enough. She is definitely an experienced and very professional doctor. I have already sung her high praises and referred her to many friends of mine who are going through menopausal issues.
