Dr Lucy Wedderburn

Dr Lucy Wedderburn is a distinguished Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist and Professor of Paediatric Rheumatology with extensive clinical and scientific expertise in childhood autoimmune and rheumatic conditions. She provides comprehensive care for infants, children, and adolescents experiencing complex inflammatory disorders, with a primary clinical focus on juvenile idiopathic arthritis and juvenile dermatomyositis. Her patient-centred approach ensures that young individuals and their families receive compassionate, tailored guidance and evidence-based treatments designed to control inflammation, alleviate symptoms, and protect long-term joint and muscle health.

In addition to her clinical practice, Dr Wedderburn leads major translational research initiatives dedicated to understanding the underlying mechanisms of paediatric immune cell responses, genetics, and disease pathogenesis. Her pioneering work focuses on precision medicine, stratified therapies, and biomarker identification to optimise treatment outcomes for children with arthritis and myositis. Dr Wedderburn earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Cambridge in 1982 before completing her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree in 1986. She subsequently obtained her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of London in 1995, specialising in immunology and human T-cell biology. Her professional qualifications and memberships include becoming a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1989, a Member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 1999, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2007, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology.
