I was appointed as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon in South Wales in 2020 and have expertise in the assessment and treatment of women and men with breast cancer and benign breast conditions. I work in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and operate on approximately 150 patients a year. In July 2025, I was appointed Clinical Director for Breast Services for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
In addition to undertaking specialist training in all aspects of breast surgery, I have a PhD in Cancer Research and am one of very few breast surgeons to have undertaken formal training in Breast Ultrasound at the renowned Jarvis National Screening Centre with Kingston University and Mammographic Interpretation and Reporting with Cardiff University. In 2021, I graduated from the award-winning postgraduate diploma in oncoplastic breast surgery at the University of East Anglia. My unique skill set enables me to provide effective treatment for breast cancer whilst preserving cosmetic outcome wherever possible and enhances my ability to work effectively within the multidisciplinary team to deliver the best care for my patients.
My aim is to deliver excellent, holistic, individualised, patient-centred care. Experiencing symptoms such as a breast or armpit lump, nipple symptoms, pain or other breast change is understandably very distressing and I understand how daunting it can be to attend clinic. My breast clinics at The Breast Centre in University Hospital Llandough and at Spire Cardiff Hospital provide rapid access to thorough clinical breast assessment, mammography, ultrasound and biopsy (if required) in a compassionate and caring environment. I pride myself on my ability to listen to patients to fully understand their concerns, to discuss clearly with them any results or investigations, to answer any questions and to support and guide them through any treatment in a professional and caring manner.
I graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 2005 with Honours having been awarded Certificates of Clinical Excellence in Surgery, Medicine and General Practice. As an undergraduate, I was awarded an ERASMUS bursary to undertake biomedical research at the University of Oulu in Finland and a bursary by the University of Wales to undertake an intercalated degree in Exercise Sciences from which I graduated with 1st class Honours in 2003.
I entered surgical training in the Wales Deanery in 2007. During my training, I was awarded the Royal Society of Medicine Adrian Tanner Prize in Surgery and the Welsh Association of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Prize.
In 2012, I began out of programme research with Cardiff University investigating the cellular mechanisms underlying cancer and was awarded the ME Williams Award, the William Morgan Thomas Award and the Michael Banfill Scholarship Award to undertake a clinical and research fellowship at two of the most prestigious academic institutions in Beijing, China. I was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Biomedical Research with Distinction in 2014 and my PhD in 2017.
I have expertise in the management of malignant (cancer) and benign breast disease, breast pain and perform oncoplastic breast conserving surgery, breast lump excision, mastectomy, wide local excision +/- localisation, sentinel lymph node biopsy, axillary surgery, nipple and duct surgery, skin sparing mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction, therapeutic mammoplasty and excision of skin lesions such as skin cysts and skin tags affecting the breasts and axillae (armpits).
I am trained in diagnostic breast ultrasound, ultrasound guided needle aspiration and core biopsy and intraoperative breast ultrasound.
I am passionate about education and training and have taught on over 45 courses for undergraduate medical students, surgical trainees and other healthcare professionals. In 2022, I was appointed as a Clinical Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University where I am Module Lead for Oncology and Surgery for the School of Medicine and Co-Lead for Professionalism. I tutor on the MSc Oncoplastic Breast Surgery programme at the University of East Anglia and lecture on the postgraduate Breast Imaging programmes at Cardiff University. I have taught extensively on Royal College of Surgeons courses and have published numerous books/chapters on surgery for both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees. I graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Surgical Education from Imperial College London in 2025.
I have a strong research interest and have numerous publications in peer reviewed medical journals. I have presented my work at national and international conferences, including several prize/papers of distinction sessions. I am an active participant in clinical audit, have a keen interest in Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) after breast surgery and am a Principal Investigator for trials at the Breast Centre in CAVUHB.

Much better than expected. Sympathetic and understanding staff.
As a 28‑year‑old receiving an unexpected breast cancer diagnosis, I was terrified, overwhelmed, and unsure of what the future would look like. From the very first moment I met Lucy, she became an anchor in one of the most destabilising moments of my life. Her presence alone brought a sense of calm that I didn’t realise I needed, and her ability to explain every step of my diagnosis with clarity, patience, and genuine compassion made an unbearable situation feel manageable. Lucy never once made me feel rushed, or dismissed. She spoke to me with warmth and respect, while guiding me with a steady, rational confidence that helped me feel safe. She balanced medical expertise with humanity. When it came time for my lumpectomy, I trusted her completely — and that trust was entirely justified. I am incredibly pleased with both the outcome and my healing. But beyond the technical, what stays with me most is how supported I felt throughout the entire process. She advocated for me, reassured me, and treated me as a whole person, not just a diagnosis. Going through cancer at 28 is something I never imagined, but having Lucy as my consultant transformed an unimaginably difficult experience into one I could face with strength and hope.
Dr Satherley along with all staff and nurses at the breast clinic and ward were incredible. From my first visit until being discharged the level and consistency of care Dr Satherley provided was amazing,. I cannot say a big enough thank you.
Lucy Satherley is everything you would wish for in a Consultant. She is kind, caring, compassionate and is extremely thorough in her clinical approach. She took the time to listen to me, answer my questions and I had every confidence that I was in the safest possible hands. Dr Satherley really does epitomise the NHS at its best. Thank you!
