I was appointed as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon in South Wales in 2020 and have expertise in the assessment and treatment of women and men with breast cancer and benign breast conditions. I work in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and operate on approximately 150 patients a year. In July 2025, I was appointed Clinical Director for Breast Services for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
In addition to undertaking specialist training in all aspects of breast surgery, I have a PhD in Cancer Research and am one of very few breast surgeons to have undertaken formal training in Breast Ultrasound at the renowned Jarvis National Screening Centre with Kingston University and Mammographic Interpretation and Reporting with Cardiff University. In 2021, I graduated from the award-winning postgraduate diploma in oncoplastic breast surgery at the University of East Anglia. My unique skill set enables me to provide effective treatment for breast cancer whilst preserving cosmetic outcome wherever possible and enhances my ability to work effectively within the multidisciplinary team to deliver the best care for my patients.
My aim is to deliver excellent, holistic, individualised, patient-centred care. Experiencing symptoms such as a breast or armpit lump, nipple symptoms, pain or other breast change is understandably very distressing and I understand how daunting it can be to attend clinic. My breast clinics at The Breast Centre in University Hospital Llandough and at Spire Cardiff Hospital provide rapid access to thorough clinical breast assessment, mammography, ultrasound and biopsy (if required) in a compassionate and caring environment. I pride myself on my ability to listen to patients to fully understand their concerns, to discuss clearly with them any results or investigations, to answer any questions and to support and guide them through any treatment in a professional and caring manner.
I graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 2005 with Honours having been awarded Certificates of Clinical Excellence in Surgery, Medicine and General Practice. As an undergraduate, I was awarded an ERASMUS bursary to undertake biomedical research at the University of Oulu in Finland and a bursary by the University of Wales to undertake an intercalated degree in Exercise Sciences from which I graduated with 1st class Honours in 2003.
I entered surgical training in the Wales Deanery in 2007. During my training, I was awarded the Royal Society of Medicine Adrian Tanner Prize in Surgery and the Welsh Association of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Prize.
In 2012, I began out of programme research with Cardiff University investigating the cellular mechanisms underlying cancer and was awarded the ME Williams Award, the William Morgan Thomas Award and the Michael Banfill Scholarship Award to undertake a clinical and research fellowship at two of the most prestigious academic institutions in Beijing, China. I was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Biomedical Research with Distinction in 2014 and my PhD in 2017.
I have expertise in the management of malignant (cancer) and benign breast disease, breast pain and perform oncoplastic breast conserving surgery, breast lump excision, mastectomy, wide local excision +/- localisation, sentinel lymph node biopsy, axillary surgery, nipple and duct surgery, skin sparing mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction, therapeutic mammoplasty and excision of skin lesions such as skin cysts and skin tags affecting the breasts and axillae (armpits).
I am trained in diagnostic breast ultrasound, ultrasound guided needle aspiration and core biopsy and intraoperative breast ultrasound.
I am passionate about education and training and have taught on over 45 courses for undergraduate medical students, surgical trainees and other healthcare professionals. In 2022, I was appointed as a Clinical Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University where I am Module Lead for Oncology and Surgery for the School of Medicine and Co-Lead for Professionalism. I tutor on the MSc Oncoplastic Breast Surgery programme at the University of East Anglia and lecture on the postgraduate Breast Imaging programmes at Cardiff University. I have taught extensively on Royal College of Surgeons courses and have published numerous books/chapters on surgery for both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees. I graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Surgical Education from Imperial College London in 2025.
I have a strong research interest and have numerous publications in peer reviewed medical journals. I have presented my work at national and international conferences, including several prize/papers of distinction sessions. I am an active participant in clinical audit, have a keen interest in Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) after breast surgery and am a Principal Investigator for trials at the Breast Centre in CAVUHB.

Miss Lucy Satherley offers patients a professional and reassuring manner. She explains medical procedures, including examinations and complex breast surgeries like lumpectomy and mastectomy. She communicates diagnoses, such as breast cancer, provides pathology results, and details subsequent care plans. Patients value her comprehensive management of breast lumps and general breast consultations.
Excellent. Staff welcoming , courteous and friendly . Also very helpful . Seen ahead of my appointment time so was able to go home earlier than expected. A very positive experience. Also consultation helpful and useful.
Miss Lucy Satherley acted with professionalism, care and integrity throughout our discussion. She offered calm and reassuring words of advice, which helped me feel listened to and supported. She also explained how long she had been working in the profession, which gave me confidence in her experience and knowledge. There was a point during the appointment where I became worried when she discussed what something could potentially be, and then identified something else that she wanted to be mindful of. However, she explained things clearly, including how tissue can present, and took the time to address my concerns rather than dismissing them. Offering me a follow-up appointment was particularly reassuring, as I felt that I would not simply be left worrying about it. I really appreciated the way she balanced being honest about her concerns while still providing reassurance and a clear plan for follow-up.
Appointment very efficient with clear explanation and reassurance . All staff very professional and warm
I can't fault the professional treatment and support that I have received today and through the whole process from the initial visit to the GP through to the hospital appointments. The admin staff have been quick and efficiant and caring. The radiographers were caring and professional answering all my questions. Miss Lucy Satherley was professional, approachable and caring. I felt completely safe and reassured. She was thorough and filled me with confidence that I could trust her findings. Thank you for the excellent care I have received today.
Consultant was very efficient. Explanations were clear. Doctor was reassuring though I had to ask questions to get greater clarification of what I should do if the cyst increases in size. Receptionist was friendly, however I was waiting longer than needed because my name was wrong on notes and the same was true for the patient before me.
Miss Satherley was warm, friendly and efficient. She was able to establish my concerns with ease and quickly managed to reassure me following and exam and ultrasound. She was mindful to allow time for questions at the end and provide helpful counselling regarding the management of any future concerns. Thankyou.
Over an hour and a half waiting to be seen but notices at the centre stated that sometimes appointments could run behind schedule. I was treated by all concerned with courtesy and kindness. Fortunately the outcome was good and I was discharged.
I attended the clinic all were very thorough and lovely and calming and left with reassurance and all were so welcoming
Took the time to explain everything that she was doing in a friendly professional way that put me at ease
Lucy is well respected surgeon, and a compassionate clinician.
