Mr Sanjeev Agarwal is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon practicing at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, Llandough Hospital, Spire Cardiff Hospital and the Nuffield Vale Hospital. He completed his specialist orthopaedic training through the Leeds Orthopaedic Programme, a comprehensive six-year training rotation covering all orthopaedic subspecialties. During this time, he developed a particular interest in hip and knee surgery.
To further advance his expertise, Mr Agarwal undertook a prestigious clinical fellowship in hip and knee replacement, complex reconstruction and revision surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Boston, affiliated with Harvard Medical School. Over the course of a year, he worked alongside internationally recognised leaders in hip and knee surgery at one of the highest-volume tertiary referral centres in the United States.
His clinical approach is grounded in thorough patient evaluation, appropriate investigation, careful pre-operative planning and meticulous surgical technique. He places patients at the centre of decision-making, ensuring they are fully informed and actively involved throughout their treatment journey, with direct access and close follow-up encouraged.
A significant part of Mr Agarwal’s practice involves managing complex cases referred after primary hip or knee replacement surgery. His experience in revision and problem-solving surgery informs his preventive approach, helping to minimise complications in primary procedures.
Mr Agarwal has published more than 40 peer-reviewed research papers and contributed review articles and book chapters to internationally respected orthopaedic texts, including The Adult Hip and publications by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is the editor and chief author of Current Orthopaedic Practice for Higher Surgical Trainees in the UK, published by Springer, with the second edition released in 2022. He also authored Radiology of Orthopaedic Implants (Springer, 2018). He remains actively involved in research, education and training.
Within Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, he works at the University Hospital of Wales and Llandough Hospital and serves as an Honorary Lecturer at Cardiff University. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, the British Medical Association and other specialist organisations. Mr Agarwal is also an examiner for the FRCS (Orthopaedics) examination and contributes to the national question-writing group.
