Professor Justin Roe is a Consultant Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) specialising in swallowing, speech, voice, respiratory and airway disorders. He has worked at the Royal Marsden Hospital since 2008 and is the Professional Lead for the Department of Speech, Voice and Swallowing. He is Associate Lead for Therapies with responsibility for head and neck, lung and neuro-oncology rehabilitation at the Marsden. From 2016-2026, he led the complex laryngology/ airway reconstruction service at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He was appointed Professor of Practice (Speech and Swallowing Rehabilitation) in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London in 2023.
Rrofessor Roe is a Professional Advisor to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) in Head and Neck Cancer and Palliative Care. He is an expert adviser to several organisations, including National Institute for Clinical Excellence, Macmillan and NHS England. He has served as the Allied Health Professions Council member for the British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists and continues to sit on the Research Committee. He is SLT Council member for the British Laryngological Association. He is President of the United Kingdom Swallowing Research Group and is on the management group for the Imperial Health Professions Academic Group.
Professor Roe’s academic work is focused on head and neck cancer and complex laryngological conditions. He completed his MSc in dysphagia research. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on head and neck cancer, airway stenosis, laryngology, lung cancer, palliative care and ethical issues.
He is regularly invited to speak at meetings internationally and works in partnership with colleagues globally on research initiatives. He also supports the development of clinical services in other countries and holds an honorary position in the head and neck/speech pathology unit at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai..
Professor Roe was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists in 2018 and was awarded an MBE in 2021 in recognition of his contribution to the advancement of the SLT profession.
