Dr James Hawken

I have been a consultant at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston since 2022. I completed the majority of my training in gastroenterology and hepatology in the Severn Deanery and also gained experience in all aspects of liver disease including liver transplantation by working in Cambridge, Southampton and London.

I can investigate a wide range of gastro-intestinal symptoms such abdominal pain, heartburn, bloating and diarrhoea. I can assess and manage those concerned about their liver, bile ducts or pancreas.

My expertise lies in the investigation and management of liver disease, which can range from investigating for early signs of liver disease to caring for those with advanced chronic liver disease. I have a great deal of experiencing caring for people with liver disease due to alcohol and metabolic factors. My specialty interest is in pancreas and biliary medicine, including conditions such as primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), autoimmune pancreatitis, Sphincter of oddi dysfunction (SOD), abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea, gastro-intestinal symptoms, heartburn, pancreatico-biliary medicine, primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and endoscopy.

I am committed to practising compassionate, patient centred medicine. I am heavily involved in medical research and passionate about giving patients the opportunity to participate in research trials. I am Principal Investigator (PI) for a large Cancer Research UK led trial for patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis and inflammatory bowel disease.
