Dr James Alexander

Dr James Alexander is a highly accomplished Consultant Gastroenterologist who provides expert care for patients experiencing a wide range of digestive and bowel disorders. With a clinical focus on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, he is dedicated to delivering personalised, evidence-based treatment plans. Dr Alexander is skilled in performing both upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopies, helping patients find clarity and relief from symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, rectal bleeding, and persistent changes in bowel habits.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Alexander is a prominent researcher and educator, holding a position as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer. His extensive research focuses on the gut microbiome, particularly its role in colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, as well as how IBD therapies affect immune responses to vaccinations. His significant contributions to the field were recognised when he was awarded the prestigious Young Gastroenterologist of the Year in Clinical and Translational Science by the British Society of Gastroenterology.

Dr Alexander completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London. He went on to complete his specialist training in gastroenterology within the North West London region and was awarded a PhD for his pioneering research into the gut microbiome and colorectal cancer. He holds several key qualifications, including a Master of Arts from Cambridge, a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians. Dr Alexander is also an active member of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinical Research Group and the BSG Gut Microbiota for Health expert panel.
