Professor Iskandar Idris is a Professor in Diabetes and Metabolic Medicine at the University of Nottingham and Honorary Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton Foundation Trust.
Originally a Nottingham University graduate, he undertook his general medical training in West Midlands rotation in Birmingham (Health Care of the Elderly, Cardiology, Respiratory, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Oncology & Haematology) and completed his specialist training in 2004 within the Mid-Trent postgraduate deanery in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Medicine.
He was a lecturer at the Division of Vascular Medicine, University of Nottingham from 2000-2002, where he undertook a research on ‘Experimental Pharmacology of Endothelial Permeability and Insulin Resistance' leading to a Doctor of Medicine degree.
Professor Idris is currently the Training Programme Director for Specialist Training in Diabetes and Endocrinology at the East Midlands postgraduate deanery and a Lead Physician within the East Midlands Bariatric & Metabolic Institute, a regional centre for Bariatric and Metabolic surgery, at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton Foundation Trust. He is also a member of the Association of Physician Specialising in Obesity UK (APSO-UK).

Clinical role
1 Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology: Delivering specialist in-patient and out-patient care in the field of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Medicine. Responsibilities also include delivering acute specialist advice and management
of patients presenting with acute Diabetes or Endocrinology emergencies.
2 Bariatric Physician: Out-patient service as part of a specialist Multi-disciplinary speciality within the East Midlands Bariatric Metabolic Institute at Royal Derby Hospital and clinical lead for the Tier 3 Bariatric service within the Royal Derby Hospital. Work involves the assessment and management of patients
with significant obesity who require surgical (Bariatric surgery) on non-surgical management for their obesity. This include attendance to bariatric MDT meetings and in-patient support for patients prior to or post–bariatric surgery. Roles within this post also include regular communication and discussion with Service commissioners (within the Integrated Care Boards
covering Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire and East Staffordshire), Public Health Managers and Consultants (working towards equity of care and prevention) and Hospital (Acute NHS trust) service Managers.
3 Acute Physician at the Medical Admissions Unit: Consultant at the Medical Admissions Unit of Royal Derby Hospital, supervising the assessment and management of patients presenting
to the hospital with acute unselected medical emergencies
4 General Physician: Supervising the assessment and management of patients admitted into hospital with general medical conditions.
