About Professor Helen Lachmann
Prof Helen Lachmann is a Consultant at the National Amyloidosis Centre, Royal Free Hospital, and leads the NHS autoinflammatory disease service. She's best suited to patients with suspected or confirmed systemic amyloidosis (AA or hereditary renal amyloidosis), or a suspected autoinflammatory disease (e.g. FMF, CAPS, TRAPS, MKD, DADA2, VEXAS), particularly recurrent unexplained fevers, rashes or joint/abdominal pain since childhood or running in the family. She is not a general rheumatologist; her expertise is complex, rare-disease cases in these two specific areas.

Qualifications
Prof Helen Lachmann trained in medicine at Cambridge (BA 1989, MB BChir 1992) and UCL (MD 2003). She holds MRCP (1995), FRCP (2005), FRCPath (2016), and was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (2023). Based at UCL/Royal Free's National Amyloidosis Centre, she has published extensively on amyloidosis and autoinflammatory disease genetics and treatment, cited over 40,000 times. Notable work includes the landmark 2002 NEJM paper on hereditary amyloidosis misdiagnosis (Lachmann et al.) and further NEJM research on AA amyloidosis outcomes. Her research spans AL/AA/hereditary amyloidosis, autoinflammation and genetics.
