About Mr Graham Geary

Mr Graham Geary is a Consultant Gynaecologist at The Park Hospital, Nottingham. He receives excellent feedback for his listening skills and his calm, approachable manner.

He particularly values working at The Park because healthcare is about more than just the doctor — the hospital has a supportive culture, excellent nurses and healthcare assistants, professional theatre teams and outstanding secretaries. There is also enough capacity to look after patients properly, which unfortunately isn't always possible in the NHS. This combination means patients receive not only the right professional advice, but a genuinely great service.

Endometriosis

Mr Geary has seen many patients with endometriosis whose symptoms went dismissed for years before their diagnosis. One of the most important things a doctor can do is listen and take symptoms seriously — which is consistently the feedback Mr Geary gets from his patients.

Importantly, Mr Geary will help you decide whether an MRI (to look for deep endometriosis), a laparoscopy, or both, are right for you. He performs laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis himself — both excision and ablation (with Helica laser) — and can help you interpret the findings and decide what to do next. Where medication is the right route, he can prescribe advanced options such as GnRH analogues, or tablet alternatives like Ryeqo.

This means you only need to tell your story once: Mr Geary provides continuity throughout the diagnostic and treatment journey, which patients consistently value.

Laparoscopic surgery

Mr Geary performs a high volume of laparoscopic surgery, including diagnostic surgery for endometriosis and keyhole surgery for ovarian cysts. He regularly performs laparoscopic hysterectomy, which is appropriate for the majority of patients; open hysterectomy is now reserved for cases where the womb is enlarged, for example by fibroids.

General gynaecology

Mr Geary also provides general gynaecology care, assessing irregular or heavy periods and offering coils, biopsies and hysteroscopies (camera tests to look inside the womb, which can be done either awake or under an anaesthetic, depending on preference).

The Park's Myosure device allows removal of polyps inside the womb under direct vision, which Mr Geary offers to his patients when it's needed.

Menopause and HRT

Women going through the menopause are unfortunately all too often unheard and misunderstood. Mr Geary welcomes women wanting to talk through the wide range of symptoms associated with perimenopause and postmenopause, and can discuss and prescribe the various HRT options, including testosterone if needed.

Colposcopy and abnormal smears

As an accredited colposcopist, Mr Geary sees women with abnormalities of the cervix, including abnormal smear test results. He can carry out smears, take biopsies and, where needed, perform treatment at The Park.

NHS practice

Mr Geary also works for the NHS at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, where he is Divisional Clinical Director for Family Care (Maternity, Child Health and CAMHS) — a role where the challenge is securing the best possible care for patients within the resources available. Clinically, he practises as an obstetrician and gynaecologist at Chesterfield, covering general gynaecology, gynaecological cancers, abnormal smears and complex laparoscopic surgery, including laparoscopic hysterectomy.

What to expect

Patients undergoing laparoscopic hysterectomy with Mr Geary will usually stay one night at The Park Hospital. Most patients having ovarian or other minor procedures go home the same day.

He trained at Nottingham City Hospital, Queen's Medical Centre and Royal Derby Hospital, and has a strong network of colleagues, ensuring patients are directed to the best possible care whenever onward specialist referral is needed.

Mr Geary holds a Master's degree in Chemistry from the University of Oxford. Before entering medicine as a graduate student in 2005, he worked in the City of London as a management consultant in business strategy for FTSE 100 companies.

He lives in Derby with his wife and son.
