Dr Frederick Burgess

Dr Frederick Burgess is a highly regarded Consultant Ophthalmologist based in Edinburgh, specialising in adult and paediatric squint (strabismus) surgery, paediatric eye care, and cataract surgery. He provides comprehensive care for patients experiencing double vision, offering both surgical and non-surgical interventions such as prism therapy and botulinum toxin injections. Dedicated to delivering patient-centred care, Dr Burgess is also the lead clinician for the regional retinopathy of prematurity treatment service, ensuring that even the youngest patients receive the highest standard of ophthalmic care.

Dr Burgess graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Manchester in 2013, having also obtained a Bachelor of Science with Honours. He completed his specialist ophthalmic training in Edinburgh, followed by advanced sub-specialty fellowship training in strabismus surgery and paediatric ophthalmology at a world-renowned children's hospital in Toronto. In 2021, he was awarded a Master of Science by research from the University of St Andrews for his work on optic neuropathy. Dr Burgess is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and holds professional memberships with the British and Irish Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Association, the American Association for Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and the Medical Defence Union.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Burgess is deeply committed to medical education and research. He serves as the Training Programme Director for Ophthalmology in South-East Scotland, where he oversees the development and training of future eye surgeons. He also holds an honorary research position as an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of St Andrews. His research contributions, particularly in the field of optic neuropathy and paediatric eye conditions, have been recognised with prestigious awards, including a research fellowship from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and Fight for Sight.
