Dr Frank McDermott

Dr Frank McDermott is a highly accomplished Consultant General Surgeon and Consultant Colorectal Surgeon who provides expert care for patients presenting with complex abdominal and gastrointestinal conditions. Dedicated to delivering compassionate and evidence-based care, he focuses on clear communication and tailored treatment strategies that prioritise patient safety and comfort. His clinical practice encompasses a broad spectrum of general surgical procedures, with a strong focus on advanced bowel surgery and surgical oncology.

With extensive expertise in Colorectal Surgery, Dr McDermott performs specialised procedures for both benign and malignant conditions. His clinical interests include the management of colorectal cancer, low and mid rectal cancers, anal cancer, advanced pelvic tumours, diverticular disease, and parastomal hernias. He is skilled in minimally invasive surgical techniques, complex abdominal wall reconstruction, and multi-visceral exenterative procedures. Alongside his surgical practice, Dr McDermott actively contributes to scientific research, focusing on genomic medicine, epigenetics, and translational science to advance surgical outcomes.

Dr McDermott completed his medical education and higher surgical training, earning a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), a Bachelor of Science with Honours (BSc Hons), a Master of Science (MSc), and a Doctorate of Medicine (MD). He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (PGCME) and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) as well as a Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In addition to his clinical duties, he serves as an Honorary Associate Professor, dedicating time to surgical training, academic research, and national specialty leadership.
