Mr Francesco Di Maggio is a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon practising in London, with an NHS consultant post at Croydon University Hospital.
He specialises in minimally invasive surgery across the full breadth of general and upper gastrointestinal surgery, with particular expertise in gallstone disease, hernia repair, gastro-oesophageal reflux, and hiatal and paraoesophageal hernia.
His surgical practice is predominantly minimally invasive, covering laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstone disease, inguinal, femoral, umbilical and incisional hernia repair, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery (including fundoplication and revision procedures), and the management of complex hiatal and large paraoesophageal hernias. He also performs soft tissue and minor surgical procedures.
Mr Di Maggio qualified with honours from the University of Milan-Bicocca in 2006 and completed his general surgery training at the University of Parma in 2014. His doctoral thesis on pancreatic cancer was subsequently published in Pancreatology. He holds a Master's Degree in Surgery of Humanitarian Emergencies (2017), gained in part through fieldwork with Médecins Sans Frontières in Sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting a commitment to surgical practice beyond conventional settings.
Between 2018 and 2021, he undertook advanced fellowship training in upper GI surgery at St Thomas' Hospital, London, one of the UK's foremost oesophago-gastric units. He has maintained long-standing research collaborations with Barts Cancer Institute, King's College London, and Imperial College London, contributing to high-impact publications and presenting at national and international conferences.
He is a member of the International Society for Diseases of the Oesophagus, the European Foregut Society, the British Medical Association, and the Italian Medical Association of Great Britain.

Mr Francesco Di Maggio is clear and reassuring during patient talks. He provides full explanations for procedures, helping patients understand their medical issues and feel supported. Specific procedures include inguinal hernia repair, umbilical hernia repair, and keyhole gallbladder removal, leading to successful outcomes. Major themes in his practice involve inguinal hernia and gallstone surgery, showing improved life quality for patients.
Dr DiMaggio performed an open surgery inguinal hernia repair in August 2025 and I was so pleased with the outcome that I didn't hesitate using Dr DiMaggio when I needed an open surgery inguinal hernia repair on the other side. I had the repair 5 weeks ago and am very pleased with the outcome. For both surgeries I did not need any post operation painkillers. Dr DiMaggio takes time to explain the operation, the benefits and risks in a very clear friendly manner which is easy to understand. I felt safe in his hands.
