Dr Taher Mahmud is a leading Consultant Rheumatologist, Clinical Lead for Osteoporosis, and Co-Founder of the London Osteoporosis Clinic. He trained at King’s College Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital, and Guy’s Hospital. He has held significant roles, including Honorary Consultant at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath and Osteoporosis Lead at Tunbridge Wells Hospital NHS Trust.
Dr Mahmud is recognised for his pioneering, holistic approach to bone health and dedication to eradicating osteoporosis-related suffering. Inspired by his mother’s experience with osteoporosis, he is passionate about preventive medicine and believes in compassionate, patient-centred care. He works closely with multidisciplinary teams to raise awareness of osteoporosis and the dangers of underdiagnosis, launching several campaigns to bring this hidden condition into public focus.
His clinical interests span the full spectrum of osteoporosis management, including early diagnosis, advanced treatments, and patient education. Dr Mahmud’s research has contributed to understanding drug side effects and improving patient outcomes. He co-founded the London Osteoporosis Clinic alongside esteemed colleagues- the UK’s first clinic dedicated exclusively to early and post-fracture screening, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis. The clinic employs the latest NICE-approved therapies and complementary non-drug interventions, working collaboratively with patients, healthcare professionals, and community partners to eliminate osteoporosis-related fractures.
Dr Mahmud is also a Trustee of the Global Osteoporosis Foundation, which is committed to eradicating osteoporosis worldwide by 2040. He has a keen interest in the arts and enjoys tennis and running. Previously, he was a trustee for Great Causes, a charity supporting cataract operations in the developing world.
Special interests:
• Osteoporosis prevention, diagnosis, and treatment
• Holistic and innovative approaches to bone health
• Patient feedback and advocacy
• Drug side effects and safety
Dr Mahmud is committed to working with patients and the wider community to transform bone health and prevent osteoporosis for future generations.
