Dr Gerald Coakley is a Consultant Rheumatologist and Physician with expertise in myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), post-viral fatigue syndromes, and Long Covid. Following more than three decades of NHS practice, he now focuses exclusively on the assessment and management of fatigue-related conditions through video consultations and no longer provides rheumatology services in either NHS or private practice.
Dr Coakley graduated from the Royal London Hospital Medical School in 1989 and subsequently completed postgraduate medical training in Nottinghamshire and London. He was awarded an Arthritis Research Campaign Fellowship, which enabled him to undertake research in immunology and immunogenetics relating to rheumatoid arthritis and Felty's syndrome at Guy's Hospital, part of King's College School of Medicine. This work led to the award of a PhD from King's College London in 2000.
From 2000 to 2023, Dr Coakley worked as a Consultant at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich. During this time, he held a number of leadership positions, including Director of Medical Education from 2003 to 2013 and Clinical Director for Dermatology, Neurology and Rheumatology from 2013 to 2018. He also served as Chair of the Education and Training Committee of the British Society for Rheumatology between 2019 and 2022 and was a member of the committee from 2016 to 2022.
Since 2001, Dr Coakley has been involved in the private care of individuals with ME/CFS and related fatigue disorders. He previously ran a weekly private fatigue clinic in London Bridge for almost 20 years before transitioning the service to a virtual model. He currently leads an interdisciplinary service for patients with ME/CFS, Long Covid, and related syndromes delivered through video consultations.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Coakley has maintained an active research interest throughout his career. He has published numerous papers in the fields of Felty's syndrome and septic arthritis and chaired a national guideline group relating to the evidence-based management of septic arthritis. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including the BMJ, The Lancet, and The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
In 2022, Dr Coakley co-authored the book Living with ME and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with Occupational Therapist Beverley Knops, providing an evidence-based guide to the management of the condition.

Dr Coakley was very thorough in his investigation of my symptoms and was able to fully diagnose my condition which had not been possible over the previous 20 months via various NHS Doctors and consultants. I will now hopefully be able to use the diagnosis and his recommendations to allow me to deal with my medical issues as best as possible and improve the quality of life I’m able to achieve.

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide this feedback.
Booked an initial assessment with Dr Coakley. I was able to pick my own date. This was done remotely which was extremely helpful. Dr Coakley was courteous, professional and very knowledgeable. I received my report promptly and was able to make some amendments where information had been captured incorrectly. Really grateful and appreciative of the service I received

Very interesting discussion.

A really helpful consultation, Dr Coakley was very compassionate and understanding, with good listening skills and attention to detail.

Thank you very much for your feedback.
Dr Coakley has been incredibly helpful throughout my daughter’s illness. He is always quick to respond to needs and requests, more so than any other doctor I have ever come in contact with. His concern and effort on her behalf have always been impressive. I always come away from our interactions wondering how he can accomplish this with us, as well as the rest of his patients, on an ongoing basis. Dr Coakley is a remarkable doctor.

Thank you very much for your positive feedback.
Dr Coakley was very helpful and completed a very thorough assessment of my condition and was able to give me very honest and accurate advice about my ill health retirement application.
Dr Coakley was extremely professional whilst being empathetic at the same time.
My daughter consulted Dr Coakley almost a year after being very ill with sepsis. She has recovered well but has lingering post-illness (chronic) fatigue. Dr Coakley was sympathetic and reassuring in addressing our concerns. At a time when we, as a family, have felt worried and a little helpless after the shock of the illness, Dr Coakley’s thoughtful and considerate approach has been helpful in allaying our fears and hugely supportive too. Highly recommended.
Dr. Coakley was very friendly, professional, and put me at ease right away. Would definitely recommend !

Thanks so much for taking the time to provide feedback.

Dr Coakley is a senior and respected physician. I have provided respiratory care to several patients that are primarily under him for complications post covid, including Post Covid Syndrome / Long Covid. Patients talk highly of the care he delivers, and he communicates well with both patients and colleagues.
