I am a Consultant Respiratory Physician with particular expertise in the assessment of persistent cough, breathlessness and complex asthma. I practise privately at The Wellington Hospital (HCA Healthcare UK), The Clementine Churchill Hospital, and OSD Healthcare in Hemel Hempstead.
A significant proportion of my practice involves patients who remain symptomatic despite previous investigation and are seeking a clear diagnosis and structured management plan. I also assess and manage sleep-disordered breathing, including obstructive sleep apnoea, and a broad range of adult respiratory conditions.
Chronic cough and unexplained breathlessness require careful and systematic evaluation. Symptoms may arise from asthma, airway inflammation, reflux-related disease, cardiac limitation, deconditioning or dysfunctional breathing patterns, and accurate diagnosis is essential.
I undertake detailed clinical assessment supported by appropriate investigations, including comprehensive lung function testing and, where indicated, cardio-pulmonary exercise testing (CPET). This enables precise differentiation between potential causes and allows treatment to be targeted appropriately.
The aim is to provide clarity — understanding what is driving symptoms and setting out a practical, evidence-based plan.
I have a particular interest in asthma, including difficult-to-control and severe disease. I lead a specialist complex asthma service within the NHS and have extensive experience in the optimisation of inhaled therapies and the assessment and initiation of biologic treatments for severe asthma.
For patients with persistent symptoms, frequent exacerbations or uncertainty regarding diagnosis, careful reassessment is often central to improving long-term control.
I assess patients with snoring, disrupted sleep and daytime fatigue suggestive of obstructive sleep apnoea, arranging appropriate diagnostic sleep studies where required and guiding treatment decisions in a proportionate and evidence-based manner.
I also manage patients with recurrent chest infections, COPD and pleural conditions, ensuring that underlying causes are identified and long-term strategies are clearly defined.
I am a Consultant at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and serve as Chief Medical Officer and Responsible Officer at Medefer.
I qualified from University College London and completed specialist respiratory training across major London centres including the Royal Free, Hammersmith, Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals. I also hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Allergy Medicine from Imperial College London.
In 2020 I was awarded an MBE for services to the NHS, recognising work in the development of remote monitoring and virtual ward pathways during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I remain actively involved in clinical research and have published in areas including asthma, pleural disease and digital models of care. My work has contributed to national discussions around remote monitoring and post-Covid care.
While research informs my practice, my private work is focused on delivering thorough, individualised care grounded in current evidence.

Patients commend Dr Matthew Knight for his knowledgeable, friendly, and professional approach, ensuring they feel listened to, understood, and at ease. He conducts thorough assessments, provides clear explanations for conditions and test results, and creates effective treatment plans. Many report accurate diagnoses after previous incorrect assessments, alongside strong support for their health, with care often addressing concerns related to asthma, breathlessness, and lung function.
Dr Knight is very clear , thorough and professional. Me provides excellent care and ensures all areas are properly examined, so he can see the full picture to complete his diagnosis and recommendations. He is supported at OMD with high quality colleagues.
Dr Knight was so caring and thorough, he is an excellent listener who took the time to fully consider my symptoms and devise a treatment plan I have faith in. He is the epitome of what I look for in a healthcare professional.
Dr Knight very experienced physician, award-winning doctor.very helpful unfortunately I can not carry the treatment with him, as my insurance not covering more diagnostic.I was really satisfied and very lucky to being his patients even is for the short time, and my health issue is not solved yet.I wish all the best, and long successful Carrier.
I couldn’t recommend Dr Knight more. Extremely professional and thorough, with a confidence that immediately assured me I was in the right hands. A really nice guy and clearly a very knowledgeable doctor.
A thorough assessment and discussion of my symptoms. I felt listen to and understood. Dr Knight seems extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his area of expertise
Dr Knight couldnt have been more helpful, going way over and above what I would have expected from a consultant. He was extremely kind, friendly, reassuring and professional. He took great care and time to ensure I understood everything from tests, to results and any follow ups, from start to finish I was put at ease reassured and confident I was in good hands. Just to add his secretary was absolutely amazing at organising and helping me get my tests and results extremely quickly, she was exceptionally kind, caring and very patient. I cannot recommend highly enough, thank you

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback and your kind words.
I found Dr. Knight to be a clinician who is truly interested/invested in the patient and their outcome.
I was so pleased that I had gone to see Dr Knight (after what turned out to be an incorrect NHS diagnosis, which left me with a lot of anxiety and no follow-up except a prescription for the wrong medication). I feel very confident that my condition has now been correctly diagnosed, after very thorough testing, and feel happy with the treatment plan, (having been very unhappy with the one given by my GP surgery's respiratory nurse). I was particularly pleased to know that Dr Knight doesn't prescribe medication unless it's actually necessary. If I hadn't gone to him, and had followed the GP surgery's advice, I would have been on the wrong medication for the rest of my life. I would highly recommend Dr Knight. He listens, which I'm afraid not all consultants do, and explains everything very clearly. If I have any further respiratory issues in the future I would definitely go back to Dr Knight.

Many thanks for your kind words
Very thorough and made me feel very confident in his advice and planning the way forward.
