Dr Michael Koa-Wing is a senior Consultant Cardiologist and Heart Rhythm Specialist with more than 20 years’ experience in cardiology. He sees patients with the full range of heart symptoms and conditions, including chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness, dizziness and blackouts, high blood pressure, heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias).
He currently works as a Consultant Cardiologist at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London, and is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London.
Dr Koa-Wing has particular expertise in diagnosing and treating heart rhythm problems, including atrial fibrillation (AF), atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), ectopic beats and ventricular arrhythmias. He performs catheter ablation for a wide range of arrhythmias, as well as electrical cardioversion.
He is also highly experienced in cardiac device therapy, including pacemakers, implantable loop recorders, defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT), and has expertise in left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) for selected patients requiring an alternative approach to stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation.
Alongside his specialist rhythm practice, Dr Koa-Wing regularly assesses patients concerned about symptoms such as chest discomfort, racing or irregular heartbeats, unexplained breathlessness, dizziness or fainting. His approach is to establish the cause of symptoms, explain the findings clearly and agree an appropriate treatment plan with each patient.
Dr Koa-Wing trained at Guy's, King's and St Thomas' Medical Schools, qualifying with distinctions, before undertaking specialist postgraduate training at St Mary's and Hammersmith Hospitals in London. He also spent time at Brigham and Women's Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School, developing his expertise in cardiac electrophysiology.
He was awarded a PhD from Imperial College London for research into cardiac electrophysiology. His work included research into ventricular tachycardia ablation and the development of advanced 3D mapping techniques for complex arrhythmias, which subsequently underwent multicentre clinical evaluation and contributed to technology used internationally.
Dr Koa-Wing is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) and a member of leading professional cardiology and heart rhythm organisations. He remains actively involved in teaching and training the next generation of heart rhythm doctors through his role as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London.

Dr Koa-Wing is very caring as well as knowledgeable. He listened very carefully to my concerns and worries. He ensured that we looked at all options and that I understood the choices that I needed to make, albeit with his guidance. All decisions were mutually 'agreed' and I was never pressured into anything that felt uncomfortable for me.
Dr Koa-Wing put me at ease straight away. His calm manner and the way he explained everything in detail was extremely reassuring and made me feel confident about the procedures. Throughout my treatment with Dr Koa Wing, he took time to show diagrams and go through the options of the procedures so I fully understood. I am so grateful for his dedication and the amazing work he does.
Dr Koa-Wing has managed my treatment in a professional, sensitive and empathetic way. He has a very calm and reassuring bedside manor and takes the time to answer my questions fully and engage on a personal level. Thank you for the excellent care!
I had waited over 9 months for an NHS consultation and Dr Koa-Wing was very upset to hear that. He listened to my medical concerns and was empathic and attentive. The investigation he ordered was the only thing required to highlight my issue and he gave me a good explanation of the outcome and suggested a remedial response. Dr Koa-Wing is genuinely caring and approachable as well as a highly competent cardiologist.
Dr Koa-Wing was very helpful, understanding and gave clear advice. I would definitely recommend him to others.
Dr Koa-Wing explained in detail my test results. He had a very kind and sympathetic manner and extremely good knowledge of the situation and the treatment necessary
My appointment with Dr. Koa-Wing was on time and un-hurried meaning the initial review of the ECG was thorough and well explained. Initial results were not considered abnormal but to be clear, a number of further tests were discussed and booked in. Hospital staff were all very pleasant and professional, care was taken to explain what the tests were, how to wear the equipment, all in all, what could have been a stressful time was managed by Dr. Koa-Wing and his team in a very reassuring manner.
Dr Koa-Wing was relaxed and friendly on first meeting, a good start to more formal and sensitive but inevitable dialogue between us.I had been given several possible treatment options by my NHS cardiology and pros and cons of these were carefully explained. Very importantly, Dr Koa-Wing invited me to explain my understanding of my preferred treatment. The approval of my own account encouraged confidence to go ahead with the proposed intervention. In all our meetings, I have a found Dr.Koa-Wing to be a very confident , competent, warm and friendly doctor .I would not hesitate to recommend him and will mention so when I see my general practitioner.
The recent visit was the review of the ablation 12 months on and the results of the 48 hours ECG tests. As previously these were presented in a courteous and friendly manner.
Dr Koa-Wing comes across as friendly and professional, treating others with respect. I remember a hospital worker telling me I was lucky to be in his care; I agree.
Dr Koa-Wing is an highly regarded cardiologist who has an excellent patient centred approach. An excellent colleague and I have no hesitation in recommending him.
