About Dr Michael Mendall

Dr Michael Mendall is a highly experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist and General Physician, recognised internationally both for his clinical expertise in digestive and liver disorders and for his influential research on the links between the gut, infection, inflammation and broader health. He is known for combining meticulous clinical assessment with a calm, clear and approachable manner, helping patients feel informed and involved at every step.

Clinically, Dr Mendall manages the full range of gastrointestinal conditions, including abdominal pain, acid reflux and heartburn, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD – Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), coeliac disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, diarrhoea and constipation, bloating, and problems related to diet, food intolerance and the gut microbiome. He also has extensive experience in liver disease, abnormal liver tests, fatty liver, and alcohol‑related issues, as well as general medical problems that overlap with gut health, such as fatigue and weight change.

An expert endoscopist, Dr Mendall routinely performs diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy (gastroscopy) and colonoscopy. He is skilled in detecting and removing polyps, investigating anaemia and bleeding, and screening for bowel cancer. He places a strong emphasis on safety, comfort and clear post‑procedure explanations, ensuring patients understand their results and options on the same day whenever possible.

Dr Mendall qualified in medicine from the University of Cambridge and completed his specialist training in gastroenterology and general internal medicine at leading London teaching hospitals. Early in his career he developed a particular interest in how infection, inflammation and lifestyle factors influence digestive disease and heart disease. This led to a higher research degree and a sustained academic career that has made a lasting contribution to gastroenterology.

He has published extensively in peer‑reviewed journals, authored book chapters and lectured nationally and internationally. His research has been at the forefront of understanding Helicobacter pylori infection and dyspepsia, the mechanisms underlying IBS, and the complex links between the gut, immunity, metabolism and cardiovascular disease. This work has helped shape modern thinking about how gut health affects the whole body, and continues to inform clinical guidelines and everyday practice in the UK and abroad.

This strong academic background directly underpins his patient care. Dr Mendall keeps fully up to date with emerging evidence and new treatments, and is committed to offering therapies that are scientifically grounded rather than fashionable but unproven. Patients benefit from an approach that is both innovative and cautious: he is ready to use new techniques or medications when the data are robust, but avoids unnecessary tests and interventions where they are unlikely to add value.

Patients value Dr Mendall’s thoughtful, holistic style. He takes time to listen carefully to symptoms and concerns, reviews previous tests and treatments in detail, and explains the pros and cons of each investigation and management option in clear, straightforward language. In clinic, he works closely with dietitians, surgeons, radiologists and other specialists to provide comprehensive, joined‑up care, and ensures prompt communication with GPs and other clinicians.

Dr Mendall welcomes both insured and self‑funding patients, offers timely appointments, and understands the importance of rapid diagnosis and clear, evidence‑based advice, particularly when symptoms are worrying or life is busy.

Dr Mendall has been looking after me since 2022. What initially began as distal proctitis progressed into a severe flare of Ulcerative Colitis in 2023, which led to my hospital admission and the very real prospect of a colectomy. At the time, I was in an extremely difficult condition, experiencing severe symptoms and with a CRP level over 200, while understandably feeling very anxious about the possibility of having my colon removed. Throughout this period, Dr Mendall’s responsiveness, care, and attention were exceptional. Thanks to his expertise and decisive management, my condition was stabilised without the need for surgery, and under his care I was able to achieve full remission. I always felt genuinely cared for and reassured, and he consistently made the time to ensure I was receiving the best possible treatment. His knowledge and experience in his field are truly evident, and I will always be incredibly grateful for the care he has provided. To this day, Dr Mendall continues to look after me with the same level of responsiveness and dedication. On several occasions, when I have been concerned about my condition, he has gone out of his way to see me the very same day, which has been incredibly reassuring.

Dr Mendall is an extremely thorough, professional and approachable consultant. He was able to see me at short notice, reviewed my results quickly and thoroughly, and explained everything at each stage of my treatment. I had some worrying and unusual test results and at a difficult time, was put at ease. I am now recovering well post-surgery and so relieved. Thank you very much Dr Mendall for looking after me.

Dr. Mendall is an exceptionally thorough and professional doctor. Even when my worsening condition repeatedly led to dead ends, he never gave up. Instead, he persevered, exploring every possible medical option until we finally found one that worked—something that has fundamentally changed my life. Before his care, I was so unwell that I could barely function day to day, living in constant, debilitating pain. Thanks to Dr. Mendall’s dedication and persistence, my quality of life has improved dramatically—I can now live and function like a human being again. Having spent many years under the care of doctors who were unwilling to go the extra mile, I can confidently say that Dr. Mendall is entirely different. His commitment to his patients and his determination to find solutions set him apart, and I am profoundly grateful for the care and support I received from him.
