About Dr Matthew Kahn

I'm a Consultant Cardiologist based at Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital (a quaternary, highly specialist cardiac centre with an international reputation).

I also treat private patients at Spire Manchester, The Circle Health Group Alexandra in Cheshire and The Rowan Suite in Liverpool. My areas of expertise include Heart Failure & Complex Device Therapy (Pacemaker & Defibrillator implants) in addition to a range of other cardiovascular symptoms.

I am the Cheshire and Mersey Network Lead for Heart Failure and Complex Device Therapy, and the MAC Cardiology Representative at Spire Manchester. I am one of the highest volume implanters of cardiac implantable electronic devices (ICDs / Defibrillators and complex pacemakers) in the country and helped set up the device service at Spire Manchester Hospital.

I treat a range of cardiovascular problems like chest pain, angina, palpitations, breathlessness and blackouts.

I specialise in heart failure and cardiac implantable electronic devices, which means I use devices like pacemakers and implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICDs) to treat patients with heart rhythm problems or heart failure.

I offer a full package of services to my patients, including consultations, tests and treatments. As well as specialising in heart failure, I also offer heart health checks for anyone who is worried about their heart. These involve a series of tests that can identify heart problems early, or simply put your mind at ease that all is well.

I understand that problems with your heart can be very worrying, and so you may have lots of questions. Myself and my team aim to respond quickly to questions or concerns.

I’m continually involved in research projects that further our understanding of heart failure and how we can treat it and am currently an Honorary Visiting Lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University.

After completing my medical degree, I won funding from the British Heart Foundation to complete a PhD investigating heart failure outcomes and the influence of insulin-resistance on vascular regeneration. I presented my work nationally and internationally, and published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. I also won the British Atherosclerosis Young Investigator of the Year Award for this work.

Since moving to Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, I’ve also developed close links with ‘The Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Science’ (LCCS). This is a collaborative research programme that brings together world-leading specialists in cardiovascular medicine. The aim is to improve the cardiovascular health in the city of Liverpool and I am excited to be a part of it.

Working at Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital, I was part of the team that put in one of the first 'EV-ICDs' in the country. This novel type of defibrillator has particular advantages that may be useful in certain situations. I also implant 'SICDs' and leadless pacemakers (MICRA & AVEIR devices).

I am the Cheshire & Mersey Network Lead for Heart Failure which allows me to help develop the strategy for managing Heart Failure across our region; this is something I am incredibly passionate about.

I also thoroughly enjoy sharing new findings and best practice with others. I teach medical students and junior doctors, and share expertise with other consultants and GPs.

I live in Bowdon (Cheshire) with my wife and two much adored children. In my spare time I love to travel and enjoy most sports.

Dr Mathew Kahn and his team performed a Duel Chamber Pacemaker at Manchester Hospital May 2026. The pre operative information given at all levels by the Cardiac team were explicit precise and encouraging. During the procedure the seven team members were informative and reassuring. I thought that the inclusive detail and information both pre and post op was profound. Which compares most favourably to the minimum information I was given 25years ago after quadruple bypass surgery. Thank you to the whole team .

Visited Dr Khan after a recent issue with my heart beat post operation for a none related cardio operation. Quickly picked up and with recent tests I am now under observation for a problem I was not aware of . Dr Khan was reassuring and explained what was going on a very professional diagnosis .

I had a lot of questions and concerns regarding the fitting of a CRT-D and I felt Matt really listened and considered everything I was saying. I feel his opinion and clinical decisions really took into consideration my specific case, which I was very grateful for. The day of the procedure went well, and Matt took the time afterwards to explain both to my partner and to me about how the procedure had gone and what to expect afterwards.

I received outstanding care from Matthew At a time when I was understandably anxious about my heart condition, he was calm, knowledgeable and extremely reassuring. He explained everything clearly, took the time to answer my questions, and made me feel completely supported. I am feeling far more confident and genuinely better both physically and emotionally. Thank you for your excellent care

Mathew Khan is an exceptional Cardiologist who has developed an international reputation in the management of heart failure and device therapy. I had the privilege of being one of his mentor/supervisors during his training years, and it has been a real pleasure watching his career develop over he last few years, leading up to his appointment at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, one of the foremost Cardiac Centres in Western Europe. Importantly in context, Matthew has an engaging personality and well developed sense of humour. I thoroughly endorse him as your Cardiologist!

Tim's patient story at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital

Tim's patient story at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital

Tim experienced a cardiac arrest whilst on the way to watch Liverpool play football. His life was saved by prompt CPR performed by fellow supporters who saved his life. He was eventually transferred to Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital for specialist treatment. Once there, Matt operated and implanted an Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator (ICD) to ‘protect’ Tim from the risk of future heart rhythm disorders. Tim has made a fantastic recovery and is forever grateful to his fellow supporters for saving his life. Rarely does ‘You’ll never walk alone’ mean quite so much…..

Heart Failure; Diagnosis and Management

Heart Failure; Diagnosis and Management

Heart failure is the leading cause of hospital admissions in adults over 65 in the UK and the prognosis is often worse than some types of cancer. Over one million people in the UK have heart failure with around 200,000 people diagnosed each year. Heart failure occurs when your heart muscle becomes weak or tired and consequently, can’t pump blood around your body effectively.

Pacemaker therapy

Pacemaker therapy

Pacemakers are medical devices that are designed to help regulate the rhythm of your heart by delivering electrical impulses that pace the heart. This can help manage slow, fast or abnormal rhythms. If you’ve been diagnosed with bradycardia, tachycardia, heart block or heart failure, your doctor may recommend that you’re fitted with a pacemaker.
