Professor Mark Edsell is a consultant anaesthetist at the Cleveland Clinic London, where he specialises in cardiothoracic surgery. His clinical interests are cardiovascular disease and hypoxia. He is a clinical Professor of Anaesthesia at the Lerner College in the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University.
He earned his medical degree in 1997 from the University of Birmingham before completing postgraduate training in anaesthesia at St. George's. He then undertook subspecialty training in Melbourne and London, focusing on cardiothoracic anaesthesia. He has been based at St. George's Hospital in London since 2008.
Prof. Edsell is also involved in medical education and is an examiner for the Royal College of Anaesthetists, as well as an educational supervisor, ALS instructor, and mentor.
He is active in research, and his topics of interest are cardiac surgical outcomes, hypoxia, and high altitude physiology. He has a particular interest in extreme environment medicine and has extensive field research experience in marine, jungle, and mountainous environments. In 2007, he was a member of the neurosciences team on the Caldwell Xtreme Everest Research Expedition. He remains involved in high-altitude hypoxia research in places such as the Himalayas and Central America.
