Dr Julius Bourke is an experienced expert in functional somatic syndromes and functional neurological disorders, such as chronic fatigue and chronic pain syndromes, and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, which lie at the interface between neurology, medicine, surgery and psychiatry. Specialising as a neuropsychiatrist and liaison psychiatrist, his clinic tends to patients with complex and often treatment resistant presentations of mood and anxiety disorders, including OCD and PTSD, as well as those with multiple other diagnoses, those with neurological diagnoses including brain injury, and those suffering physical and neurological symptoms without diagnostic explanation.
He has been frequently instructed in the provision of expert medico-legal opinion on psychiatric disorders, head injury and post-concussion syndromes.
Dr Bourke obtained his medical degree from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. He then went on to work in emergency medicine and neurology in East London and hyperbaric medicine in Egypt. He pursued his psychiatric training in East London and then at The Maudsley Hospital.
Outside of his clinic, Dr Julius Bourke serves as a clinical senior lecturer in neurophysiology and clinical psychiatry at the Queen Mary University of London. His specialist research interests are in the neurophysiology of chronic pain, the functional somatic syndromes and related disorders.
Dr Bourke has given numerous talks and presentations on both a national and an international basis. He has been widely published on an array of subjects in his field. He has also co-authored a textbook on psychiatry and has contributed chapters to numerous others, including world-leading textbooks on internal medicine and ENT surgery.

Dr Julius Bourke is friendly and knowledgeable in patient interactions. He provides clear guidance for complex conditions such as sleep disorders, anxiety, and fibromyalgia. Patients receive thorough assessments and support, including medication withdrawal. Dr Bourke's expertise is frequently seen in Neuropsychiatry.
At times I felt patronised, or belittled for my personal thoughts and queries. There was a situation which got out of hand were he would come to me and tell me everything I'd be saying behind his back to the nurses and was not happy at all about me doing this even though it wasn't criticism about him, they were confidential comments I was suggesting to the nurses to make my experience here better such as having a 10 minute warning before Dr Burke would be visiting. Overall Dr Burke is a very good Doctor who knows a lot about medications and about the mental health conditions I've been facing, however I don't think we were the best match as I am someone who likes to discuss alternative options especially when it comes to medications and I felt I didn't get a say in any of my treatment plans and what I would be more comfortable with, it would be shut down very quickly.
Dr Bourke is extremely professional; most personable; thorough, patient and clear in discussions and decision-making. I have great confidence in him. His care has been exceptional.
Cannot pick any flaws in Dr Bourkes care. Sharp at times but I appreciate that approach.
Doctor Bourke potentially saved my life. I was unable to sleep, suffering from night terrors. The physical symptoms were atrocious even though there was nothing wrong with my body. Been in his care was the best thing that happened to me at a time when hopelessness had taken hold. He was kind, compassionate, professional and assuring. I trusted his assessment and advice fully, thanks to that and some hard work, I have been discharged. I feel I was 8n the best hands and will forever be grateful. Should I need help again, he will be the first door I knock on. Paola. O
"I was referred to Dr Bourke in the first half of 2021 with a later confirmed diagnosis of Fibromyalgia, Small Fibre Peripheral Neuropathy, and resultant extreme anxiety. I was in constant unbearable pain and finding it very difficult to cope mentally. Early-on, Dr Bourke promised me that whilst my condition might not be curable, it was treatable over time. At times at my lowest, I clung-on to his reassuring, knowledgeable and professional words and tone, sure in the knowledge that (along with my stubborn determination) I would recover sufficiently in the medium-term future. Without his involvement (and during COVID restrictions which severely restricted medical access), I feel certain I would have had a mental breakdown. I was discharged from his care in January 2023 having gradually recovered over 2022 when Dr Bourke guided me through Tramadol and Duloxetine withdrawal. Although throughout he was rightly paid for his services, there are literally no sufficient words to describe the 'above-and-beyond' support and kindness he showed me. Recurrence of my condition/s may or may not happen in the future, but I'm hugely reassured that if it does I can be referred back to Dr Bourke as required. February 2023" Regards Bob
Wonderfully brilliant, insightful, patient, kind and supportive. Can not recommend him highly enough. Makes even the ridiculously complicated feel conquerable.
Psychiatry and Neurology often overlap and Dr Bourke as a neuropsychiatrist, whose opinion I value and who has helped several of my patients.
