I dont charge anything like this much for a consultation and I believe my charges are the lowest around. From the charge you quoted I suspect you probably had a complex investigation such as a cardiopulmonary exercise test which involves an extra assistant and complex breathing tests while exercising using expensive equipment. This charge is for this test alone and does not allocate a detailed consultation session within it. However, I always try to communicate a summary of my findings based on the preliminary data. This would be a similar situation for other tests run by colleagues such as an exercise stress echo, cardiac CT or a cardiac MRI etc. At the end of the test the data is transferred to a work station where I then need to spend further time analyzing it before sending out a detailed letter. Whilst I almost provide my professional opinion on the preliminary results of the test at the time it would not be appropriate to embark on a detailed consultation without all of the data and especially where there are other patients waiting for their test after yours whose time would be compromised. The cost for a cardiopulmonary exercise test is controlled by the hospital, who recoup a significant proportion of the cost and who own the equipment. The cost of this test is not controlled by me. Whilst I appreciate this is an expensive test the cost in Dorset is >£250 cheaper than several other hospitals nationally, and we have one of the most advanced and up-to-date pieces of kit and software for this test. Please feel free to come back for a full consultation separately to discuss things further in a session dedicated to that process so that I can try my best, with allocated time, to address any further queries you might have.
