About Dr Deniz Atan

Dr Deniz Atan is a highly accomplished Consultant Ophthalmologist who specialises in the complex field of neuro-ophthalmology. Her clinical practice focuses on diagnosing and managing disorders that affect both the eye and the brain, bridging the gap between ophthalmology, neuroscience, and genetics. Dr Atan provides expert care for patients experiencing visual symptoms related to neurological conditions, ensuring they receive comprehensive and reassuring support throughout their treatment journey. Her dedication to patient care is matched by her commitment to advancing the understanding of visual pathways and genetic influences on eye health.

Dr Atan began her distinguished medical journey at the University of Cambridge, where she graduated with an honours degree in Medical Sciences, before completing her clinical training in Clinical Medicine and Surgery at the University of Oxford, qualifying in 1996. She initially trained as a Physician in general medicine, obtaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians, before pursuing specialist training in ophthalmology. She went on to earn a PhD in ocular genetics and completed postdoctoral research fellowships in neurogenetics. Dr Atan is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, where she was twice awarded the prestigious Harcourt Medal, and is a member of several professional bodies, including the British Medical Association, the British Neuroscience Association, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. She also serves as the President of the UK Eye Genetics Group.

In her clinical practice, Dr Atan manages a wide range of conditions, including adult and paediatric neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-oncology, neuro-inflammatory diseases, and retinopathy of prematurity. Her extensive research work investigates how genetic and environmental factors influence the development and function of the visual system. By combining her clinical expertise with cutting-edge scientific research, she contributes significantly to improving early detection and therapeutic approaches for complex disorders affecting the eye-brain axis. Dr Atan also holds an academic appointment as a Consultant Senior Lecturer, where she helps train the next generation of eye specialists and advocates for diversity and inclusion within the scientific community.
