Dr. Daniel Pearl

I was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Physician in 2013 at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, Somerset. I have a full time NHS contract, providing a complete diagnostic and therapeutic gastroenterology and hepatology service.

Since taking up my consultant post, my focus has been on delivering safe and high quality endoscopy, developing advanced endoscopic skills and bringing new innovations into my endoscopic practice.

In my specialist role:

1) I am an accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopist, a certification which is a marker of a high quality and subject to regular national audit of clinical practice

2) I am accredited in Capsule Colonoscopy, a non-invasive diagnostic test of the colon, which is an alternative to colonoscopy for investigating bowel symptoms or signs. Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is 1 of only 3 sites in the Southwest selected to run the NHS colon capsule pilot

3) I specialise in small bowel capsule endoscopy, and have a lifetime exeprience of greater than 1000 capsule endoscopy procedures

4) I specialise in advanced therapeutic colonoscopy and endoscopy, with particular experience in removing complex pre-cancerous polyps of the colon by EMR (endoscopic mucosal resection)

5) I am a clinical nutrition specialist, with particular experience in the management of patients requiring feeding tubes (PEG, PEJ, JEJ, RIG) and feeding into the vein (PN), including patients with complex feeding disorders

My management roles include Director of the Somerset bowel cancer screening programme, clinical lead for the capsule endoscopy service and clinical nutrition lead (shared role)

I have previously been clinical service lead for gastroenterology and upper GI cancer MDT lead at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust
