Dr Charis Khoo is a Consultant Anaesthetist at King’s College Hospital and also practises privately at LIPS Healthcare, Battersea Power Station. She has a sub-specialty in Paediatric Anaesthesia and previously worked as a Consultant in Paediatric Anaesthesia at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) in Singapore. She has been in consultant practice since 2017 and received her CESR (UK) in 2024.
Dr Khoo has a particular interest in paediatric neuroanaesthesia and was involved in the first Auditory Brainstem Implant procedure carried out in South-East Asia at KKH. During her time there, she contributed to validating the use of EEG monitoring (Massimo, SedLine) in paediatric populations. She also developed wide-ranging experience in paediatric pain medicine through her work with the Children’s Pain Service, managing acute post-surgical pain, cancer pain, and complex sedation weaning.
Her clinical background also includes acute medicine and emergency care. She provided immediate pitchside medical support for the Singapore Rugby Union at the HSBC 7s, applying ATLS principles and managing airway, cervical spine, and concussion injuries. She further enhanced her expertise in critical care and transport medicine during a fellowship with the Children’s Acute Transport Service (CATS) at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Alongside her clinical work, Dr Khoo is an experienced educator. At King’s College London, she supervises medical students and serves as a regular OSCE examiner. She also supports anaesthetic trainees through tutorials, vivas, and lectures, and for four years she was an invited lecturer for the Masters of Anaesthesia Examination Preparatory Course in Singapore. She has taken part in international teaching initiatives, including a collaboration between KKH paediatric surgery and Port Moresby General Hospital in Papua New Guinea, where she provided anaesthesia for complex paediatric surgical procedures.
Her research interests include improving perioperative processes for patients. She has conducted a meta-analysis on the use of Thromboelastography (TEG) to determine bleeding risk in haematology-oncology patients undergoing surgery, and in Singapore worked on a quality improvement initiative to reduce fasting times for children by developing safe carbohydrate fluid sachets. At King’s College Hospital, she continues to mentor junior doctors through audit projects.
