Here is what I emailed Dr Budair and the team after my ankle surgery success. I meant every word. Dear Dr. Budair and Sarah, I am writing to express my heartfelt appreciation and love following today’s surgery. For the past six years, I have been facing significant challenges, particularly in the last two years, with my ability to walk. I have only cried four times as an adult: once at the birth of each of my children, overwhelmed with joy; once after a painfully slow 15-minute walk with my children across the grass; and finally, this September, when a day spent playing on a bouncy castle at my child’s birthday party left me incapacitated for 48 hours due to functional issues. Today’s surgery has been a turning point. For the first time in a long while, I can move my big toe properly, and I feel a sense of hope that I thought I had lost. I have consulted with two ankle surgeons, five podiatrists, and three physiotherapists, and spent countless hours searching for answers online. However, Dr. Budair has been the only one to truly listen and believe that my issues could be resolved. Dr. Budair’s curiosity, belief, and wise consultation have led to a comprehensive understanding of my condition and offered me various treatment options. Without Dr. Budair, I fear I would be facing the next 40 years with constant pain in my ankle, knee, and hip. I know there is still much work to be done, and it’s not a guaranteed success, but there is now genuine hope for a better future. Hope to walk my children to school, play with them in the garden, jump on the trampoline, walk more than five minutes without despair, and maybe even play cricket again once I am strong enough. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your belief, your unwavering support, and most importantly, your curiosity. The journey from semi-crippled to running a 5k begins today with toe-wiggling exercises. Sarah, I would also like to thank you for your patience in handling my endless emails and contacts, and for arranging the dates. I understand how crucial the administrative team is, as we experience in our work at the children’s hospital. Your assistance has been invaluable. With much love and gratitude, John (Grace and Jude who have got their fit dad back!)
